We all have been professing / agonizing about the Apple’s imaginary Tablet PC (at least to this date), for a while now. I have these lingering thoughts bouncing in my mind, but Before I write this allow me to inform you that I am a Mac and Windows Software Developer and 80% of my work is done in Windows and the rest of the time I port the applications that I build on the Windows platform to Macintosh OS X. So I use Visual Studio 2008 as well XCode 3.2 as my primary tools on PC and Mac, receptively. At home I use both systems and I own Macs and PC. Having said that – here are a few thoughts about Tablets:
1.) What if there is no Apple Tablet coming on the January 27 Media Event? Apple has never said that a tablet device is forthcoming! So it can’t be Apple’s fault if we makeup imaginary devices in our minds and babble about it! We can’t blame them, or can we? Are these controlled leaks by Apple’s marketing juggernaut?
2.) If no Tablet is introduced on this Media Event, will Apple’s credibility be damaged? If Apple never revealed / insinuated about such a device, how could their credibility be hurt? A fair question, isn’t it? Though, I am sure if Apple don’t deliver a tablet device of some kind – their so called ‘HALO’ will be tarnished, even with their core customers. All because of hype level.
3.) Do we ‘really‘ need a Tablet? Most of us have desktop and laptop computers with a few notebooks and Smartphones thrown in there for good measure! So what are you going to do with a tablet that you can’t do with your 10″ Netbook? Better yet, what can you do with a Tablet that you can’t do with your MacBook Pro 13″, if you are a Mac user or a Sony VAIO 12″ system, if you are a PC user?
4.) Does the small form factor and light weight on a tablet justify the purchase of it? With the advent of the Netbooks, this is not true anymore. My MSI Wind that can run Windows 7 as well as Hackintoshed OS X, can perform all those tasks very well and it’s light enough to be taken just about anywhere and the screen size is larger in comparison to a Tablet, since large sections of the tablet screen area will be used to display UI virtual devices (i.e. Virtual Pointing device – Virtual Keyboard – Cursor controls, et al).
5.) If Apple has no Tablet PC to be introduced on 27 Jan’s Media Event, will there be riots? Geeks running in the streets rampant and there will be street fights with the ‘Tech Police’? Will there be candlelight demonstration’ in front of every Apple Store with Geeks singing “We shall over come…”? The answer is no – no and definitely no!
6.) Microsoft, to her credit, came out with the Tablet PC in 2004 with a specific version of their OS, Windows XP for Tablet Computing, and OEM companies follow along by introducing Tablet PCs of all kinds and shapes and forms. In reality, it never caught-on and it just fizzled out.
7.) A bigger credit goes to Apple for introducing Newton, a handheld device that is considered to be the Grandfather of all PDAs & Tablet PCs, in Feb 1998. To this date, newton is being used by many – Not just as a novelty device, but as an actual tool. As well know, Mr. Jobs somehow saw Newton as the Devil’s device and killed it promptly as soon as he went back to Apple (second coming of Jobs, verse One – lOl).
8.) Hand-Writing recognition – Ink writing can play a big roll in the future of these devices, but why? I though we were getting away from the Pen / Pencil & Paper! Voice Computing and Gesture processing would be the name of the game.
9.) One area that the Tablet computing would be greatly appreciated is to lower the usage of paper (Tree killing) and hopefully move ‘printed text’ to Tablet systems (i.e. Apple iPad or Kindle). Books – Text Books – Periodicals – Newspapers can easily and efficiently be moved to these devices and updated regularly via their networking system (WiFi – MyFi – 3G & 4G). Imagine all the paper work that the medical community produces annually be moved to this media. In education, student & teachers move all their paper material to PDF format and use it on these devices instead of actual paper. Can you imagine how much money a student would save through buying their books in this format? Students and teachers can be carrying ‘all’ their books with them ‘all’ the time without breaking anyones backs and without the need for Jack carrying jill’s books all the way up the hill. With this processes, we will be saving millions of trees a year and that would be great for the environment.
More to come…

1.) How big is it:? What is the Screen size and how much does it weight.
2.) How much does it cost: Knowing Apple, this is a futile question to ask. Suffice to say that it will be expensive and you will cut down from your household grocery budget to have one of these babies on your kitchen table at breakfast time!
3.) What OS will it be running? Will it run the full OS X? If so will it be the new Lynx version 10.7? If it’s iPhone, then will be OS 4? Who the hell knows!
4.) iPhone Apps: if the Tablet comes with iPhone OS 4.0, then will it be safe to assume it will run iPhone Apps and if it does do you have to buy them or can restore them from your iTunes Applications backup repository to the Tablet?
5.) Will this Tablet be used and subsidized by the print industry to save their hides? If so, what would be the method of content Deliver?
6.) Will this Tablet have Cell capabilities? 3G / 4G / HSDPA as well as MyFi / WiFi?
7.) Who the hell will buy this device? Is this going to be something that only the rich people buy and don’t know what to do with it? Will be bought by the masses, as they bought and ‘learned’ to use iPods in conjunction with their computers and iTunes software and iTunes Store? Will it be just a bunch of happy MacHeads that buy it and add it to their collection of their Apple branded gizmos?
8.) What would happen to MacBook & Macbook Pro sales? Will this little Tablet decimate the Sales of Apple laptops, or are they in different categories?
9.) What will be the level of interaction with other Apple products? Will it Sync with your iMac and MacBook Pro or even Win PC system via iTunes? Can iTnues be convinced to take another Sync responsibility? Can you control Apple TV with it? Most importunately, how will it interact with the iPod and iPhone?
10.) What is the name of this damn ‘none-existent’ device? iPad? iSlate? What? Give it a name, already. I hope, just to spite Steve Ballmer, Apple doesn’t use the word “Slate” in the product name. This iSlate might be coming directly from the Office of Black Ops (Apple Skunk Works) as a disinformation just to drive the competition (primarily Microsoft) nuts!
11.) What will I do with this damn thing, apart from in-bed computing, if it at all it exists?
12.) I have 2 MacBook Pros – a 24” iMac – a MINI – a G4 – an MSI Wind Netbook! Question: How the heck am I going to justify the purchase of Apple Tablet (if it existed) when I have all that computing power? Hard to think of a reason. But I am sure that Apple marketing and propaganda group will convince me as well as the world, that living without an Apple Tablet would be a meaningless life not even worth living and we all line up to get out grubby little hands on those shinny tablets. ;) Apple Marketing Borg will prove to you that resistance is futile and you’ve got to buy what they ‘suggest’ that you should buy…

The rumours are getting hotter about the Apple January event and the possibility of the introduction of the long awaited – never materializing Apple Tablet, the infamous or famous (depending how you look at it), Apple iPad. This picture is not what the actual product will look like, it’s a possible rendition of it might look like. Note the keyboard, this is the part that amazes me the most. As you are aware, more than 99% of the computer users never use their numeric keypad. In the picture, the numeric keypad has been replaced by a large touchpad and I am surprised that how come, Apple in their designing minds, haven’t’ come up with a keyboard like that. No need for the mouse anymore and that touchpad is even larger than the new MacBook Pro’s touchpad. I hope apple incorporates this design in the next release of their thin full 101 pro keyboard.
Have you also noticed that there are no tablets being introduced by any major OEMs! Why? The answer is simple: They are all waiting for Apple to see what the next design might be. Just like all smartphone OEMs that copied iPhone from A-Z, the Apple iPad, if ever released, will be copied. I bet, if Apple releases the iPad, in 3-6 months, every major OEM will have a tablet PC copied from Apple design. May be this is ‘a’ reason that Apple still hasn’t introduced their long awaited iPad. But question remains: What would be the real application of this device and how powerful could it be to justify it’s purchase? If you have a Netbook – a Notebook and some kind of Smartphone, then how could you justify the purchase of such device? Will this device replace our Netbooks, that most of us just bought or will it replace the iPhone? Will it have 3G / 4G capabilities already build in and will it only work with AT&T? What task can it perform that it could not be achieved with of the items in the list of devices that I just mentioned? All good questions, if I may add, but not that many answers. I have faith in the Apple’s propaganda machine and I am sure that in time they will come up with perfectly logical reasons as to why ‘we all’ need such a device, to the point that we will ask ourselves: “How the hell did I get along all these years without an iPad”. Apple’s propaganda machine is truly powerful and the best case and point will be iPod and iPhone. Apple never gives advance notices as to what they are working on and rightly so, but there will be an event in January and it might contain an iPad and a ‘surprise’! Now what could that surprise be? With Apple, its an impossibility to guess, since the guesser is nearly always wrong. This time – Kevin Rose is even quiet and we still have to hear his predications for this event. What do you think? An iPad? New iPod Touch? I guess we gotta wait and see.
I will be attending the WWDC10 at the end of june and I am happy to know if Steve Jobs will be there running the entire Keynote address. Let’s hope so. Happy computing…
