Multi Tasking in iPhone & iPod Touch

February 23rd, 2010 by admin No comments »

Allow me to begin by saying that I have never purchased or owned an iphone. I have been using Smartphone nearly from their inceptions and I have refused to buy Apple iPhone, because of it’s limitations & inferior hardware, though I have iPod Touch 2nd Gen 32GB. Having said that, I guess we are always go back to this old bellyache of ‘Apple haters’ that stems from ‘lack’ of multi tasking in Apple’s OS 3.x.x that is being used on iPhone 3G-S and iPod Touch 2nd Gen. Also the fact they (Apple Haters) compare OS 3..x.x with the brand new Android 2.x from google, disregarding that the Android 2.x must be compared to Apple OS 4.0 and comparing a band new Phone OS with another that is one full generation behind is inherently wrong! Well it is somewhat true, but it’s not the whole truth. Upon close examination, you will see that OS 3.x.x on both devices do ‘background tasking’. How you’d ask? Easy to answer:

1.) You can launch iTunes and choose your playlist and then drop the application to background and return to the ‘desktop’ while you are listening to your music. This is Multi Tasking!

2.) While you are listening to your music you can go to your ‘desktop’ and launch any application and work with it, while itunes is running int he background. This is Multi tasking!

3.) In the case of iPhone, while you can be listening to your iTunes playing your favorite playlist, and you are running one of your application, your Cell phone side of the device is fully functional and being monitored at all times. When you receive a phone call, the OS suspends the Music – Pushes the front task application to the background and activates the phone GUI. This also, is multi tasking.

What we are expecting from the upcoming Apple OS 4.0 is the ability to launch multi application and switch between them, while they can be running as an active task in the background and can be brought forth by a task switching UI element (hardware or software). But I find it to be very rare for most people, to want to run several active tasks in the background at all times and use the device as a phone as well. I certainly hope that Apple provides full multi tasking in the OS 4.0 when it comes to iPad and at least a simplified version of it on the iPhone. It is possible that the next rendition of iPhone could be as powerful as an iPad, in which case, the full multi tasking option could be activated on that device. I also think that Apple should provide a preference pain that the users can actually activate / deactivate part or all aspects of multi tasking. This option will enable the legacy iPhone be able to upgrade to OS 4.0 and enjoy some of it’s new innovations. Let’s hope Apple provides these functionalities – or at least – activates them in the next version of the OS 4.

Greatest Software Development Milstones of 2009

January 21st, 2010 by admin 1 comment »

Here are the biggest milestones in Software Development that we either reached or surpassed in 2009:
1.) Team Development is here, at last: With the introduction of Visual Studio 2008, the state of Software Development has been truly revolutionized. How you’d say? By truly sharing everyones code and design (AkA Sweat & Code), in an automated manner that presents member of the team with code already made and helping to stop the reinvention of the wheel, which to this date happens too often even in small development teams. This Team effort will be even extended further once Visual Studio 2010 is released. The Microsoft Share-Point server also plays a great role in this effort. Team Development is the way to develop software for this decade. A combination of Agile & XP approach to programming in a Team Development environment would make us much more productive and closer to meeting our deadlines. Hopefully…
2.) Scripting and Dynamic Languages like Ruby – PHP – Perl – Python and Javascript have taken their place at the forefront of the development projects. This is one of the reasons that I have been learning JavaScript as fast as I can for the past 2 months. I have never worked with JavaScript – but I have been involved in the development of C# projects. So I am trying to bring these Apps directly to web, by using Javascript as the transport mechanism for the UI to be brought to a web browser environment, so the users can operate these application remotely without the need for VPN and complicated / possibly unsafe connection to their servers. If you are a Java Dev, learning JavaScript is a cinch. But since I am Primarily a C++ / C# developer, takes me a little bit long to learn the damn thing. What is fascinating for me is the fact that JavaScripting is an Object Oriented development language. Something that I never would have thought or believed.
3.) Simple better than Complex, At Last! Simpler solution is chosen by most developers as oppose to heavier and more blotted tools. Spring Framework – Ruby on Rails, are consequently, hot.
4.) Frameworks for the Web: Standard application software engineers, developing in C++ / Visual Basic / C#, have been enjoying Development Frameworks for years on all platforms. Now Frameworks are appearing for the Web developers and this is great. In a short time, these Frameworks will be sophisticated enough that the Web Developers can produce great software in much shorter time.
5.) Palm OS, webOS, has been a fantastic example to prove that CSS – HTML and Javascript can be used for more than just as web development tools. Palm webOS has done well in this field.
6.) Open-Source Software has come a long way and it actually attracted heavy weight developers to join in and contribute their time. To the point that I and planning to join the Audacity Macintosh development team soon. All developers must find some time to donate to the Open-Software organization. This, in long run, would be a great help for all of us.
7.) Nokia QT Cross Platform GUI Tools, which the name explains it all. Use it to cross develop your applications on PC and then simply recompile it on Macintosh. The Apps generated with this tool don’t look like cross developed Apps. It actually looks like native Apps. We should all than Nokia for putting this great tool in the Open-Source Community.

Apple Tablet – Bring down the Tablets…

January 19th, 2010 by admin No comments »

We all have been professing / agonizing about the Apple’s imaginary Tablet PC (at least to this date), for a while now. I have these lingering thoughts bouncing in my mind, but Before I write this allow me to inform you that I am a Mac and Windows Software Developer and 80% of my work is done in Windows and the rest of the time I port the applications that I build on the Windows platform to Macintosh OS X. So I use Visual Studio 2008 as well XCode 3.2 as my primary tools on PC and Mac, receptively. At home I use both systems and I own Macs and PC. Having said that – here are a few thoughts about Tablets:
1.) What if there is no Apple Tablet coming on the January 27 Media Event? Apple has never said that a tablet device is forthcoming! So it can’t be Apple’s fault if we makeup imaginary devices in our minds and babble about it! We can’t blame them, or can we? Are these controlled leaks by Apple’s marketing juggernaut?
2.) If no Tablet is introduced on this Media Event, will Apple’s credibility be damaged? If Apple never revealed / insinuated about such a device, how could their credibility be hurt? A fair question, isn’t it? Though, I am sure if Apple don’t deliver a tablet device of some kind – their so called ‘HALO’ will be tarnished, even with their core customers. All because of hype level.
3.) Do we ‘really‘ need a Tablet? Most of us have desktop and laptop computers with a few notebooks and Smartphones thrown in there for good measure! So what are you going to do with a tablet that you can’t do with your 10″ Netbook? Better yet, what can you do with a Tablet that you can’t do with your MacBook Pro 13″, if you are a Mac user or a Sony VAIO 12″ system, if you are a PC user?
4.) Does the small form factor and light weight on a tablet justify the purchase of it? With the advent of the Netbooks, this is not true anymore. My MSI Wind that can run Windows 7 as well as Hackintoshed OS X, can perform all those tasks very well and it’s light enough to be taken just about anywhere and the screen size is larger in comparison to a Tablet, since large sections of the tablet screen area will be used to display UI virtual devices (i.e. Virtual Pointing device – Virtual Keyboard – Cursor controls, et al).
5.) If Apple has no Tablet PC to be introduced on 27 Jan’s Media Event, will there be riots? Geeks running in the streets rampant and there will be street fights with the ‘Tech Police’? Will there be candlelight demonstration’ in front of every Apple Store with Geeks singing “We shall over come…”? The answer is no – no and definitely no!
6.) Microsoft, to her credit, came out with the Tablet PC in 2004 with a specific version of their OS, Windows XP for Tablet Computing, and OEM companies follow along by introducing Tablet PCs of all kinds and shapes and forms. In reality, it never caught-on and it just fizzled out.
7.) A bigger credit goes to Apple for introducing Newton, a handheld device that is considered to be the Grandfather of all PDAs & Tablet PCs, in Feb 1998. To this date, newton is being used by many – Not just as a novelty device, but as an actual tool. As well know, Mr. Jobs somehow saw Newton as the Devil’s device and killed it promptly as soon as he went back to Apple (second coming of Jobs, verse One – lOl).
8.) Hand-Writing recognition – Ink writing can play a big roll in the future of these devices, but why? I though we were getting away from the Pen / Pencil & Paper! Voice Computing and Gesture processing would be the name of the game.
9.) One area that the Tablet computing would be greatly appreciated is to lower the usage of paper (Tree killing) and hopefully move ‘printed text’ to Tablet systems (i.e. Apple iPad or Kindle). Books – Text Books – Periodicals – Newspapers can easily and efficiently be moved to these devices and updated regularly via their networking system (WiFi – MyFi – 3G & 4G). Imagine all the paper work that the medical community produces annually be moved to this media. In education, student & teachers move all their paper material to PDF format and use it on these devices instead of actual paper. Can you imagine how much money a student would save through buying their books in this format? Students and teachers can be carrying ‘all’ their books with them ‘all’ the time without breaking anyones backs and without the need for Jack carrying jill’s books all the way up the hill. With this processes, we will be saving millions of trees a year and that would be great for the environment.
More to come…

Keep obsessing over Apple Tablet PC!

January 9th, 2010 by admin 2 comments »

1.) How big is it:? What is the Screen size and how much does it weight.
2.) How much does it cost: Knowing Apple, this is a futile question to ask. Suffice to say that it will be expensive and you will cut down from your household grocery budget to have one of these babies on your kitchen table at breakfast time!
3.) What OS will it be running? Will it run the full OS X? If so will it be the new Lynx version 10.7? If it’s iPhone, then will be OS 4? Who the hell knows!
4.) iPhone Apps: if the Tablet comes with iPhone OS 4.0, then will it be safe to assume it will run iPhone Apps and if it does do you have to buy them or can restore them from your iTunes Applications backup repository to the Tablet?
5.) Will this Tablet be used and subsidized by the print industry to save their hides? If so, what would be the method of content Deliver?
6.) Will this Tablet have Cell capabilities? 3G / 4G / HSDPA as well as MyFi / WiFi?
7.) Who the hell will buy this device? Is this going to be something that only the rich people buy and don’t know what to do with it? Will be bought by the masses, as they bought and ‘learned’ to use iPods in conjunction with their computers and iTunes software and iTunes Store? Will it be just a bunch of happy MacHeads that buy it and add it to their collection of their Apple branded gizmos?
8.) What would happen to MacBook & Macbook Pro sales? Will this little Tablet decimate the Sales of Apple laptops, or are they in different categories?
9.) What will be the level of interaction with other Apple products? Will it Sync with your iMac and MacBook Pro or even Win PC system via iTunes? Can iTnues be convinced to take another Sync responsibility? Can you control Apple TV with it? Most importunately, how will it interact with the iPod and iPhone?
10.) What is the name of this damn ‘none-existent’ device? iPad? iSlate? What? Give it a name, already. I hope, just to spite Steve Ballmer, Apple doesn’t use the word “Slate” in the product name. This iSlate might be coming directly from the Office of Black Ops (Apple Skunk Works) as a disinformation just to drive the competition (primarily Microsoft) nuts!
11.) What will I do with this damn thing, apart from in-bed computing, if it at all it exists?
12.) I have 2 MacBook Pros – a 24” iMac – a MINI – a G4 – an MSI Wind Netbook! Question: How the heck am I going to justify the purchase of Apple Tablet (if it existed) when I have all that computing power? Hard to think of a reason. But I am sure that Apple marketing and propaganda group will convince me as well as the world, that living without an Apple Tablet would be a meaningless life not even worth living and we all line up to get out grubby little hands on those shinny tablets. ;) Apple Marketing Borg will prove to you that resistance is futile and you’ve got to buy what they ‘suggest’ that you should buy…

Apple’s Most Important Moves in the Last Decade!

January 3rd, 2010 by admin No comments »

1.) 2001 Apple introduces the OS X 10.1 . The first version of the OS X was indeed for the enthusiasts and it was a way to get Apple out of the OS 9 era. But 10.1 truly established Apple’s operating system as the highest quality OS on any Personal Computer. It also pushed Microsoft to excel and produce higher quality product.
2.) 2001 Apple introduces The First Gen iPod (needs no explanation, I guess)

3.) 2001 Apple opens the first two Apple Stores : This store was a great experiment, but strange enough Apple decided to open it in Tyson Corner, Va. and Glendale, Ca. Now apple has more than 270 stores around the world and none of them have been closed! Talk about success.

4.) 2002 Apple introduces iPhoto the initial component to the iLife package. It actually made digital photography manageable and its concept was widely copied by every OEM software developer.

5.) 2003 Apple introduces Aluminum PowerBook G4 – iTunes Store Opens it’s doors.

6.) Apple Annouces it’s transsion to Intel processor Hell has Frozen over, says Steve Jobs!
7.) 2006 BootCamp enables Macs to run Windows directly : PC-Mag chose MacBook Pro as the fastest PC running Vista.
8.) 2007 Apple brings out iPodTouch and iPhone (needs no explanation, rest is history!).
9.) 2008 Apple opens iPod Touch and iPhone to third party developers. SDK and Extension for XCode is released for free.

Microsoft Surface Computing, Hidden in the Cellar! Why?

January 1st, 2010 by admin No comments »

MicrosoftApple The contrast between Apple and Microsoft is so huge that one can get lost, just trying to outline the corporate differences that exist between the two them. Case and Point: Surface Computing. Apple has had the Tech community claiming trees for the past two years to discover if a 10” Apple Tablet exist or not. The hype has risen to such degree that if Apple announces the iSlate in the January ’10 event, I am sure that they will sell 10M+ in the first year. Just by the power of Hype and marketing, since Tablet PCs have existing for a long time now and guess who brought them to the market? Yes you are right – it was Microsoft. The opposite of this would be Microsoft’s Surface Computing that has been around for the past 2 years. This technology can drive any size screen – from a “Tablet” to a 50” desk-display. It is fast – powerful and totally compatible with Windows 7 and all the applications that you can think of. In contrast with the Apple corporate policy, what does Microsoft do? The hide the damn technology in a deep cellar somewhere in Redmond Campus and throw the key away! Why? What are they waiting for? As a software developer, specializing in GUI and MMI, I’d say that type of approach should be the next logical step in our computing evolution and Man-Machine-Interface. Why hide it? Why not bring it to the main-stream market? Why? This is the clear reason as to why Microsoft seems to be failing in all the fields of computing even though they might have the upper hand in timeline and technology and Apple has the upper hand in every field, even they might not be ahead of anyone in timeline or the technology that they are using (e.g. iPhone). I really hope that Microsoft changes its policies and bring the surface computing to the forefront as the next UI for the next decade and get their Hardware & Software developers to embrace the technology. It’s time to wake up Microsoft and Smell the GUI…

The Six Epic Fails of the Decade, Past!

January 1st, 2010 by admin No comments »

epic_fail.jpg  1.) Y2K! Yes the infamous and hyped for money Y2K! It was a huge hoax that companies fueled it to the point that people were waiting for the world to screech to a dead halt. Some say that more than $4B was spent to fix the none-existent problem. We lived thru it and we are still here! Epic Fail – Daylight Rubbery!

2.) FaceBook Content Rubbery: changes its tune and now it says whatever you create on their system, belongs to them! Belongs to them? Yes sir! The own everything that you put on their system and they do what they please with it! Surprisingly they get away with it with minimal pain. Epic Fail (on part of the Community) – Daylight Rubbery (on part of FaceBook)!

3.) Twitter Hack: Now this was so stupid, since whatever twitter receives, it spills it out immediately to the public, so what is the point of hacking an open system that has nothing inside? Just to show off? What? I can’t think if anything else. Epic Fail!

4.) Social media updates: FaceBook – Twitter – Ustream have been spitting out updates like there is no tomorrow! Enough already, since most of updates leave the existing bugs in place and introduces more bugs! Let us deal with the bugs that we have learned how to deal with and keep the new ones to yourself! Epic Fail!

5.) Gmail Crashes: While Google’s Gmail was in beta, it never crashed. Since it has been declared out of beta and officially released, it keeps crashing. What gives? Can we take Gmail back to Beta? As a Software Engineer I have never heard of an application or service that has gone from version 1.0 to version 0.9 beta! Have you? Epic Fail!

6.) Google Wave: We were counting the days as to when we received our invite to the launch of Google Wave. Incidentally, I got my invite in the first week of the Wave launch. It can be and amazing tool, but has it fizzled out already? I think Google has done a terrible job of advertizing and expanding the product. I won’t be surprised that the close it up as they did with Grand Central. Epic Fail (on Google’s part)!

Google Apploudes EU’s decision agasint MSFT

December 26th, 2009 by admin No comments »

Google has applauded the EU’s decision concerning the Browser Bailout that forces Microsoft to provide alternative options for the Windows users. Now this decision has been handed down by the EU court to make sure that Microsoft’s choke hold on the Browser market is defused, at least in Europe. First they demanded that Microsoft removed IE 8 completely from the Windows environment, to which Microsoft told them, very politely to go and do ’something’ to themselves. Then they came out with this idea that Microsoft has to provide the user with alternative option for the user, so they may choose if they want to. Now this, to me, is like asking GM to provide Ford as an alternative to their products! It makes no sense, but I guess this is one of those “je ne sais qua” type of stuff that is hard to explain. A word of Caution: Google might be applauding the EU decision against Microsoft, but they won’t be really laughing when their ‘Search Monopoly’ will be under the scrutiny of the same court that rendered the decision against Microsoft.

The Potential up-coming Apple Tablet, The iPad?

December 24th, 2009 by admin No comments »

The rumours are getting hotter about the Apple January event and the possibility of the introduction of the long awaited – never materializing Apple Tablet, the infamous or famous (depending how you look at it), Apple iPad. This picture is not what the actual product will look like, it’s a possible rendition of it might look like. Note the keyboard, this is the part that amazes me the most. As you are aware, more than 99% of the computer users never use their numeric keypad. In the picture, the numeric keypad has been replaced by a large touchpad and I am surprised that how come, Apple in their designing minds, haven’t’ come up with a keyboard like that. No need for the mouse anymore and that touchpad is even larger than the new MacBook Pro’s touchpad. I hope apple incorporates this design in the next release of their thin full 101 pro keyboard.
Have you also noticed that there are no tablets being introduced by any major OEMs! Why? The answer is simple: They are all waiting for Apple to see what the next design might be. Just like all smartphone OEMs that copied iPhone from A-Z, the Apple iPad, if ever released, will be copied. I bet, if Apple releases the iPad, in 3-6 months, every major OEM will have a tablet PC copied from Apple design. May be this is ‘a’ reason that Apple still hasn’t introduced their long awaited iPad. But question remains: What would be the real application of this device and how powerful could it be to justify it’s purchase? If you have a Netbook – a Notebook and some kind of Smartphone, then how could you justify the purchase of such device? Will this device replace our Netbooks, that most of us just bought or will it replace the iPhone? Will it have 3G / 4G capabilities already build in and will it only work with AT&T? What task can it perform that it could not be achieved with of the items in the list of devices that I just mentioned? All good questions, if I may add, but not that many answers. I have faith in the Apple’s propaganda machine and I am sure that in time they will come up with perfectly logical reasons as to why ‘we all’ need such a device, to the point that we will ask ourselves: “How the hell did I get along all these years without an iPad”. Apple’s propaganda machine is truly powerful and the best case and point will be iPod and iPhone. Apple never gives advance notices as to what they are working on and rightly so, but there will be an event in January and it might contain an iPad and a ’surprise’! Now what could that surprise be? With Apple, its an impossibility to guess, since the guesser is nearly always wrong. This time – Kevin Rose is even quiet and we still have to hear his predications for this event. What do you think? An iPad? New iPod Touch? I guess we gotta wait and see.
I will be attending the WWDC10 at the end of june and I am happy to know if Steve Jobs will be there running the entire Keynote address. Let’s hope so. Happy computing…

How Good is Windows 7 64b Ultimate? Part-2

September 26th, 2009 by admin No comments »

Here is the continuation of the Windows 7 experience for me….
As I was saying, the system booted to tahe setup program and I noticed that it was completely like Vista and that scared me! Or may be I should say concerned me. What if this was the same as vista? What if all the optimization and improvements that I have heard so much about were pipe dreams of come kind? Having all that on my mind, I went thru the installation parameter settings and selected a clean install, and a final bang on the return key the whole process started.
The installation of Windows 7 was not so unlike the Vista. It was fast and the whole thing took less than 20 minutes, with one huge difference; After the installation there was only a couple of small updates, as oppose to over 1.5GB of updates for Vista. I am sure that the updates are on their ways as well speak, but for the time being very small amount had to be downloaded.
Well my so-called ‘concerns’ were unfounded. Windows 7 is what Vista was supposed to be. The UI is really clean and uncluttered and more importantly it is much faster than the Vista and wait time, on the part of the user, is very short or none existent. What all have to accept is this: Windows 7 is not a continuation of Win XP Pro. So some of those procedures that you are used to are gone and you have to be ready to do some learning. The learning curve is not too steep, but indeed it’s there and we all have to deal with it. Win 7 is the continuation of Vista – an Improved and optimized vista. So if you upgrade from Vista, things are nearly the same. But if you are updating from Windows XP, then you are dealing with a whole new ball of wax. Equally, I am sure, that XP users will master Widnows 7 in matter of days – as oppose to months.
One huge problem that I had with Vista was the boot time. The boot time took anywhere between 1-5 minutes. Don’t get me wrong; the machine was ready for the user after 30-60 seconds after the login. But you could see the hard drive light went on forever and ever while you used the machine at reduced speed. The shut down on Vista was no so different either and it took a long time.
The first time, after installation of the updates, that I booted the system, I could not believe my eyes and I had to reboot the machine twice more before I dared to believe it. Windows 7 was nothing like Vista – Fast to start up and faster to shutdown. I compared it startup and the shutdown with my iMac running Snow Leopard and Windows 7 was really at snapping at the heels of Snow Leopard. That was sweet and to my mind long over due. Microsoft has indeed optimized Windows 7. Is this is a service pack for Vista? I think not. In comparison to Snow Leopard relation to Leopard – Windows 7 is really an upgrade to Vista, much more than Snow leopard was to Leopard. I know – I know, I will get the hate mail for saying this, but you are hearing it from Macintosh user and it had to be said. Microsoft has done a great job of speeding up all Windows 7 operations and they have to be commended for it.
At this point, we have no idea how ‘safe’ or ‘ unsafe’ Windows 7 is and is going to be. But assuming that Windows 7 continues where Vista and XP left off, it would be great start for it. After nearly 8 years XP is solid and Vista has received many Security updates and plug-ups for large craters that was found in it. Lets hope that the trend continues and Windows 7 becomes more and more secure.
Compatibility was another issue that I was concerned about. True that Windows 7 has the core code of Vista, but it also contains major changes under the hood, and it these changes, in some cases, go all the way to hardware level. On top of that, I chose the 64b edition of Windows 7, which supposedly, could add to the incompatibility factor. I am happy to report that aside from Roxio 2009 none of the application that I use had any problems running under the Windows 7. I tried applications like Visual Studio 2008 Team, my primary development tool – Office 2007, every ones favorite tool – Adobe CS4, etc. and all worked well. As for Roxio, well they have an update that works with windows 7. You of course need to update to Roxio 2010 to get the whole thing working well under Windows 7. What was surprising was the fact that Apple’s Safari – iTunes worked very well under Windows 7. I got the 64b version of the iTunes and it’s working like a charm. I still haven’t been able to hunt down the 64-bit version of Safari. If you have any idea of its where about, please drop me a URL.
I have been using the Windows 7 64b for the past week and it’s running smooth – efficient and extremely fast. The 64b OS is running the 32b Applications very well, though I was told that the 32b Apps run slower in the 64b OS environment. All in All, a very pleasant surprise for me.
If you are using Windows XP and you are sick of it (like most people are), then Windows 7 is for you. If you are fed up with the Vistas speed and strangeness, then Windows 7 is for you. If you are a Mac user, then I suggest you look at Windows 7 as your secondary system. You can also look at Windows 7 as your alternative OS in virtualization more.
As I said in the beginning: It was a long time I was not excited about what Microsoft did. Windows 7 is changing that feeling for me and it was long overdue! Go MSFT…
Read the Part 3 of this report next week, when I had more time testing the Windows 7 Device Drivers….

How Good is Windows 7 64b Ultimate? Part-1

September 20th, 2009 by admin No comments »

Let me start by saying that it has been a long time that I wasn’t REALLY excited with anything that Microsoft has done. In fact, the last time that I was excited with what Microsoft has released was when they released Windows 95. For that release, My friends I went to the store and waited 2 hours for the store to actually close and reopen at 8:00p, since that was the time that Microsoft chose for the release of the Win 95.
Well this has been the Weekend for Windows 7 at my household. Late on Friday afternoon, we received an MSDN Flash message that Windows 7 (64b & X86) will be released before 5:00p. I stayed late and downloaded the images and burned the DVDs. I decided to install the 64b version, but I didn’t want to screw up my Vista installation on my Dev machine. So I decided to get a new set of HDDs to help me keep my machine setup intact.
The reason that I decided to install the 64b version was to find out about the incompatibilities that the 64b version might have with the existing x86 applications, including Microsoft Visual Studio and Microsoft Office 2007’s components (e.g. Word – Excel). I use Visual Studio for all my developments on PC (and XCode on the Mac) and of course, you can imagine why their compatibility is so important to me.
I also wanted to install a 64b OS on my PC, since a few weeks ago; I installed Apple Snow Leopard on my Macs and switched to the 64b setting (manually, if I may add. Since Apple decided that it is ‘safer to runt he whole thing in 32b, as oppose to giving their users 64b by default. It was interesting to install the 64b version on my PC and compare the speed and compatibility of Office:mac 2008 with Office 2007 in a 64b version of both OS X and Win 7. It is understood that none of these Apps are 64b and they have to deal with the strange 64b environments and vise-versa the 64b operating systems has to deal with strange 32b Apps.
We should also remember that Microsoft hasn’t released updates for the Win 7 as of writing of this blog. I am sure that we will be getting updates very soon. In the case of Apple OS X Snow Leopard, Apple released 10.6.1 update soon after the release of their OS.
So, on my way home, I picked up a 1TB WD Drive with 16MB of cache running at 5700rpm from our local Best Buy superstore. Mind you, it was hard to step down to this drive, since my Home Dev system has a 15000rpm extremely fast HD, which I want ultimately run as my boot drive for Windows 7 64b Dev machine at home.
I removed the connectors from my local – vista based drives, and install the 1TB in place of my drive zero and booted with the Windows 7 (64b) DVD. I also have a Windows 7 x86 Beta (build 7100) running on an Acer Laptop 64b Dual Core Turion running at 2GH for a long time. I need to test the applications that I develop on Windows 7 as well as other platforms that Microsoft offers. I expected similar performance – Look & Feel. Well, I was pleasantly surprised. The RELEASE version of the Win 7 is much better.

I booted the machine with the windows 7 64b and the installation screen came up…

Apple ][e! Do you remember this Picture?

September 16th, 2009 by admin No comments »

I was looking around the net and I saw this picture! I have heard so much about this setup: Apple ][e and the Dual 148KN Drive and the Apple Green Monitor with the tilt screen! Please would go GAGA over it and they dream about it! Now this is not a 100 years ago. May be less than 30 years and if you compare the power of this machine, 1MHz 6502 processor and 64KB of memory with dual 148K floppy, might 1/10000 of the power of the slowest machine that we use now-a-days. Yet, looking at this picture, even tho long before my time, makes me feel that I like to have this machine and see what it can do. So here is my question: Is Aesthetics and Design so important that even in 30 years, well design products will be wanton by generation that they are using much more powerful and better products? Some how I have a feeling that the answer to this question is a resounding: “YES”!

Are the ‘Stand Alone’ Personal computers Dead?

July 26th, 2009 by admin No comments »

Well I guess those days are along gone. Recently I sold my house and moved to a condo, temporarily that is, for a while the only Internet connection that I had was the close by Starbucks Café. Well it has been kinda hard – and I mean hard! I used to have two Internet connection: One was a fast Cable running at 20Mb/s Down and 2.2Mb/s up capped at 100MB/m and the other was a DSL connection running at 10Mb/s down and 1.0Mb/s up with unlimited download. Seems I took both of them for granted. Coming off of a system like this to nothing is a true Cyber Shock. Yes it is. You will exhibit withdrawal symptoms – you feel left out – you feel that you have lost something and you keep looking for it. No – no, don’t get me wrong; most of us are using PCs (Mac and Windows) every day. But how many of us would use a computer without an Internet connection. I remember, a longtime ago, we use PCs of all kinds without an Internet connection. At some point, when Internet started getting popular, a lot of people refused getting Internet and they argued as to the real need for such a contraption. Are the ‘Stand Alone’ Personal computers Dead?Consider it!OK, so we have established that we are too dependent on Internet. Another question is this: Do we use all the Application that we have on our machines much less now so we can make time ‘to’ be on the web and use WebApps? Does this mean that Internet had devalued other applications that most of us paid good money for it? IF that is the case, then I have to declare that Internet had failed miserably in replacing all those applications that we have on our machines.

How Ridiculous can they get?

July 25th, 2009 by admin No comments »

802.11n been in production for 2 years now & it has been selling nearly 18 months. IEEE 802.15 is about to finalize the specs by Sept! Can you believe this? This pure stupidity! How are they going to to change all those ‘N” Wireless Routers that has been sold for the past 2 years? They might get the firmware updated, true, but what will they do will all that hardware that is in use right now? No wonder WiFi is not advancing fast enough!

Microsoft contemplates selling Office for $29 in China!

July 22nd, 2009 by admin No comments »

This is really getting out of hand! We know about free trade and rules of capitalism, sure, but don’t you feel that this lack of regulation is truly getting out of hand? Microsoft is thinking of selling Office in China for $29! Is this not fair, it’s for sure a great idea, but the execution of it stinks. As I have always said: Leave it to Microsoft to shoot itself ion the foot! Shouldn’t they first sell Office in North America at that price and then they move these type of pricing for China? It is understood that Piracy is rampant in China, but the patience of the North America, the number one backer of Office, has a limit too. Enough is Enough Microsoft!

Remove Browsers From the Host OSes!

July 20th, 2009 by admin No comments »

Will MSFT distribute Win 7 in Europe with no Internet Explorer? If so, why not in N. America? Why not remove IE from ‘ALL’ versions of Windows? Just like any other browser, you can go and download it from multiple sources – including Microsoft. But this rule should also include Apple as well as all flavors of Linux. Apple should also agree or be forced (just like Microsoft was forced in Europe by the penalties & fines) to remove Safari from all version of OS X. In case of Linux, they can not include Firefox in all their distros. This might balance the uses of browsers across the board. May be at that time, we can really get a clear picture of how these browsers are selected and used by the netizens. I am sure we will have a completely different picture than we have right now.

Ballmer Laughs off the Chrome OS Threat?

July 15th, 2009 by admin No comments »

How can Ballmer of MSFT laugh the threat of Chrome OS off and dismiss it? How can he be so sure? Inside Info, or pure stupidity? I see Chrome to be a direct competitor to Microsoft Windows and to a certain point Apple’s OS-X. If this a logical deduction, then how could Ballmer laugh the threat off? Makes no sense to me. What is sad to me, if the fact that Linux could be a true target of Chrome OS, especially if Chrome would run well older hardware.

Chrome 2.0 – A new beginning?

May 23rd, 2009 by admin No comments »

Google has just updated their Chrome Browser to 2.0, and I have been using it for the past 2 days. The browser seem to be faster in rendering and that tells me one thing: Google has gone back and optimized it’s connections / Dataset handling to the back-end (WebKit) rendering engine. Also, Text-Draw is much better and Text smoothing and Anti-Aliasing, looks much better. Not much changes in terms of GUI or MMI (Man Machine Interface), all seem to be working as it used to. But GUI Thread response seem to be working better. They might have taken our suggestions and add more threads managing the GUI. I hope that is the case. Since Google decided to adopt the ribbon format of Microsoft Office 2007, they should also provide the equivalent items that exist in the standard menu settings in the Ribbon format. Some equivalents are there – but some are missing. Hopefully Google will provide the missing items in the next minor upgrade. Overall, this is a major update and all those that are using Chrome as they Primary or secondary Browser, should download the update. One more thing that is missing from the Chrome is the version for Macintosh (dubbed: Chromium). This seems to be a never ending battle between Google and Apple. Over the table they are good corporate friends – under the table, Google seems to be stabbing Apple as hard as and often it can! Why? Still a mystery to me! May be one day will find out why… Until then, enjoy Googles ‘Free’ major update to Chrome.

Apple Tablet – Vaiable Idea or a Pipe Dream?

May 20th, 2009 by admin No comments »

Could this be the Apple Tablet (AppLet) that we have being waiting for? Is this the next version of NetBook that apple will be coming out soon with, may be as soon as 09 June? Apple has certainly bought enough 10.5″ LCD screens in the past year and and a half to build 10M of those creators and sounds like a good starting point. If successful, they can increase the production quickly, since the infrastructure is out there and if not ’so’ successful, the loss margin will be low. Wish I knew more about Apple’s future strategy. But if I did, then it wouldn’t be Apple, would it?

All Music at Apple are DRM FREE now

April 12th, 2009 by admin No comments »

Apple, at last, has removed all the DRM from their music Library. This is a great step on the part of legit buyers of music. I think this is going to be a great step towards a betterment of music sales and also for the buyer who can no used their music wherever they want. The last obstacle is now SONY! Will SONY also join the 21st century? That remains to be seen! But the days for DRM is numbered! Poor Microsoft that spend so much money to build such a DRM-’Rich’ system in to Vista! Pity!

Zero-Day Attack Agasint Powerpoint!

April 12th, 2009 by admin No comments »

Zero Day attack against PowerPoint 2000 – 2003 is still successful, since Microsoft hasn’t come up with a resolution for this problem! Since this attack concerns the 2000 2002 2003 versions Powerpoint, Microsoft has has ample time to fix this problem! Question is this: Why this venerability has been aloud to spam across 3 version of the Powerpoint, and why wasn’t it fixed in the numerous updates that was issued as far as 2001? Then again we are talking about Microsoft which adheres to no rhyme or reason. Strangely tho, the problem does not exist in the Office 2007! What gives? I just mentioned this matter to a friend of mine on our Ustream TV and he simply replied: “Stupidity”! May be thats true, but certainly it isn’t a satisfactory response in the part of Microsoft.

FF 3.0.8 Released, Problems continue!

March 28th, 2009 by admin No comments »

Mozzila released FireFox 3.0.8 and it seems they have fixed several security problems and added a few improvements.  But the two biggest problems that FireFox has had, since it’s inception still remains.

1.) FireFox remains THE SLOWEST loading Browser in the world.

2.) Firefox has a habit of spinning your CPU, if you leave it idle and unattended!

Why can’t FireFox do something about these 2 everlasting problems?  No matter how good the Browser is, most people are staying away from FireFox, so they just don’t have to deal with these problems, to the point that they don’t even admit it and recognize the problem!  This will not go away, and makes people to use other browsers instead of FireFox!

Microsoft Trying hard to get Biz to upgrade to Vista or 7!

February 15th, 2009 by admin No comments »

MSFT to biz world: Drop 2000 & XPs-embrace goodness of Vista & 7! Biz World to MSFT: Go fly a kite! MSFT: Can’t, we dropped Flight Sim! LoL! This has been the conversation between the Business users of Windows and Microsoft for years now. In face since the release of XP. Nothing has changed! Biz says if it works – Don’t upgrade it. But some case, even when they buy a new machine, they down grade it since their ITDept.that do not allow the use of any OS that is new and they aren’t trained on. Business IT has been neglecting theretraining oftheir people for new and upcoming Servers -Applicationsand evenOperatingSystems that MSFT keeps releasing!. Theyhardly can maintainXP properly and MSFT is asking them toabandonsomething that is working for them and embrace Vista and Win 7 that they don’t have any idea how to: Install – Configure – Maintain and Protect. Microsoft lives in the clouds? Ooops! No pun intended! They, at least, want to live there and little they know that their heads are already up in the clouds! Biz willnotupdate unless they absolutely /positivelyhave to!Microsoft, you are better off to find a way to force them or deactivate all 2000 and XPs and get hit by massive law suits that judges andjurieslove to award in cases against Microsoft! Rock and hard place, I guess!

PooPs is back!

January 1st, 2009 by admin No comments »

Hello everyone – I m back and I am planning to blog more extensively in this new year.  I will be going to the MacWorld Expo on the 5th Jan.  I was looking forward to the keynote speech by Steve Jobs, and now it seems that his for REAL not going to be there.  Jobs’ Keynote speech is what I forward to, which I won’t be seeing it this year.  I guess I paid all that extra money ($500+) for nothing!  Well – so be it.  What makes me more worried is the actual reason that Steve jobs is not presenting the Keynote.  Are the rumors that we hear true?  Is his health in such a bad situation?  Are these all rumors and innuendoes?  I personally hope that its the later case.  Steve Jobs is too young to leave us this early.  Nothing to do, except wait and see and hope for the best.

Apple Mac MINI! DEAD-OR-ALIVE?

November 1st, 2008 by admin No comments »

I have been thinking about buying another Mac MINI and set it up as my ‘Media Center” in my Home office and I was waiting for the release of the ‘new’ Mac MINI.  As soon I decided to get the machine, new rumors surfaced that Apple is about to discontinue Mac MINI (and shoot itself in the foot).  This could be a grave mistake on the Apple’s part!  Why?  Well, Mac MINI has been single handedly responsible for the renewed interest in the Macintosh line of computers in general and specifically the sales of all in one iMac.  It all started with release of Apple iPod, of course, and then came Mac MINI – the first Apple low priced Mac ever.  A large percentage of iPod owners decided they will have the low priced Mac as the perfect companion to their iPod.  Most of these Mac MINI Owners have gone to upgrade their systems to iMac and or completely switched to Apple systems.  So, in my judgement, discontinuing the Mac MINI will be a gargantuan mistake and Apple will suffer the consequences of it very quickly.  Unless Apple has a replacement for MINI in the similar price bracket, otherwise they should keep MINI around.  I guess I will wait for another week or two and then buy the existing one.  Will let you know again.

What do you know about this?  Do you own a MINI?  Did you switching to iMac because if your MINI?

Google – Microsoft – Yahoo Code of Conduct!

Google – MSFT – Yahoo have brought down their new “Code of Conduct Commandments” from the Mountain (Written on stone, no doubt) for operating in China! Is this not too little – damn too late? After all the cooperation that they all have offered to the RED COMMUNIST CHINESE government to track down normal people and collect information on them! Here they are – all three of them – talking about Code of Conduct for operating in China? Damn too late in my book. Do no Evil? Yea – right!

Microsoft Darkening Pirated Windows in China!

October 23rd, 2008 by admin No comments »

MSFT is encouraging Chinese people to buy Genuine Windows by turning screen background to Black 60 mins. Pirating Chinese Users are up in arms. Will this tactic work? I tell ya – These tactics will never work and All the software Developers MUST realize this – Sooner or later! Get the message – read the signs! Piracy will never go away and copy protection ONLY hurts the paying customers, since pirates will get around it – Every time. The only thing that can work is this: Lower the price of the Operating Systems (windows and OS X) and bring it a point that it won’t be worth for anyone to pirate it. Imagine, Microsoft lowers the price of Vista to $39, stating 1 Nov, 2008! They make Billions more than what they are making now. Users don’t have to copy – pirate or perform any other illegal act to run their machine with the latest and the greatest Operating System. Lower the price of Office to $59, so every user can equip their system with Vista & Office for less than $100. Sounds good, doesn’t it? It will never happen and that can directly be attributed to lack of vision on the part of Microsoft – Apple and Adobe.

Watch Out Apple, MSFT SideSight is coming!

October 22nd, 2008 by admin No comments »

Apple invented the Touch UI and popularized it thru it’s implementation in iPhone and iPod and now via new MacBook Laptops with Glass-Pad! having all this information and popularization, Microsoft is now here to take advantage of all this and add it’s own challenge and improvements to the market with the addition of gestures to the standard Touch UI. This about this; Isn’t it great that someone else does your initial R&D – Development – Debugging – Testing – QA and Marketing, then you arrive and take all of that and your own icing on the top and profiting form it?Well this is not the first time and I am sure it ain’t the last time! Microsoft has been doping that to Apple for a long time and they have done it overtly. I guess, after all, Size matters! Taking on the Microsoft juggernaut is not easy and companies like Apple prefer to give their technology to Microsoft as oppose taking them to court! But lets remember that yesterday was the Anti-Piracy day and Microsoft has been pushing this day as the “day of attonement“, may be it is a good time for Microsoft stop it’s own Piratical ways as well. Don’t you think so?

Google Adds KILL SWITCH to Android!

The nerve of these damn people! Unbelievable! Google included ‘Kill Switch’ in Android so they can kill Apps remotely on ‘YOUR’ phone! Just like Apple’s remote erase switch! We pay for the Phone & rightly so we expect to be totally in control of our property and they control it remotely and at their discretion? What makes Google and Apple to be in charge of our property that we paid for? How can this be justified? We should never buy and item that we will not have total control of it. This is disgusting! We DESU Apple iPhone and Google Android totally!

Microsoft Office:mac 2008 and 2004 Updates

MSFT released security update for Office 2008 & 2004. So if you use any, then update. 2008 version weights at 154MB opening to 450MB! Why MSFT released Office:mac 2008 update of 12.1.13 (154MB) for manual update? If you check for updates thru Apps, you get no updates! This sounds very suspicious to me! Why would Microsoft do that? Why not make it available thru the normal update system? Does any of you know anything about this? Please let me know.

USAF Cyber Command forming a force that will wage war online! It’s about time! The Red Communist China has such force for 15 years. It is widely known that the Red Communist Chinese has been using Cyber Warfare against US-Canada and a select list of European Countries including Russia) 24/7. So this is great news that USAF is taking these matters very seriously and is planing to counter it with force. Every country on that list, should join and help USAF Cyber Counter Intelligence efforts to stop the RED communist Chinese menace and their illegal intrusions in to our lives! Go USAF!

Long URL addresses in OS X Mail.app!

October 8th, 2008 by admin No comments »

Historically speaking, Apple Mail.app hasn’t been able to handle long URL address that are directly paste in to the email body. If you are using Mail.app on a Mac and you want to paste a long URL address to an email, then don’t paste it directly to the email body. Follow these steps:

1.) Go to EDIT Menu–>Link–>Add (a text box opens up)
2.) Paste your long URL in the text box and click OK

You will see that the URL is inserted as a clickable link in your email and the link is not broken in multiple lines. Yes, this is a workaround, but it seems that Apple has no plans (even after 5 years) to fix this problem! Why? Your guess is as good as mine.

After Yahoo and Google helping China Spy, now Skype admits helping China spy on the calls to and from China via Skype! Do no Evil? My AZZ! This is disgusting to me, but what do you think about this? How do you feel about Skype knowing that they help China spy? If they help China to spy why not other countries? Now we know, even Skype with all the encryption build in their system, are EVIL too.

AMD chips in Apple systems?

October 7th, 2008 by admin No comments »

Does Apple has a exclusive deal with INTEL? If not, will Apple ever use AMD CPU and Chipsets in their upcoming systems? This will be so great, since Intel has to compete with AMD and traditionally Intel has to follow the AND trend, since they always cut the price and consequently Apple systems will be more affordable and they will hopefully sale more! What do you think, will they ever take this step? Will Intel allow this? I, for one, love to see this. What do you think? will you buy a MBP with AMD chip inside?

Microsoft is eying the Open Document format!

Will Open Document Format be taken over Microsoft. What is the strategy? Remember, MSFT just gave away Open Office Document format! What is the strategy? Will MSFT give away the Office Open XML Document format to open source and now they are eyeing this up and coming standard? Are they going to corner the market again and start using the Open Document format as the primary format for Office? Hmmm! As Mr. Spoke says: “The possibilities are endless!

ClickJacking – The Web Strikes Back!

October 4th, 2008 by admin No comments »

After finding out about the huge hole in TCP that can sink any server with a rather low bandwidth with no need for Bot Fleets, now we hear about ClickJacking! A new attack that ‘ALL’ Browsers are vulnerable to! So, it makes absolutely no difference, which browser you are using. If yo get hit by ClickJacking – you won’t survive, regardless of what server you were using at the time!

Simply put, ClickJacking is: “The basic description of the attack is that it allows the attack to trick the user into clicking on something other than what they thought they were clicking on. The two researchers who discovered the technique say that it “…gives an attacker the ability to trick a user into clicking on something only barely or momentarily noticeable.” This click could be the gateway to many other kinds of exploits on your system.” When you hear all this about the web, don’t you feel sick? Don’t you want to stop surfing? May be this is the ultimate goal of these people! To stop you being on the net – learn and fin out about the things that ‘they’ cannot hide for you anymore! Could this be the ultimate goal? Web certainly creates a lot of headaches for those that run the whole show behind the closed doors – faceless – nationless people that run our lives for us. Now we have tools that we can track them and find out instantly what they are up to and this by no means is acceptable to them! May be they want to corrupt the well and stop us all from come to web and find out what they are up to! The thought is plausible! Think about it! What do you think? Plausible or Conspiracy Theory?

Recived an Acer Aspire 5050 laptop

October 1st, 2008 by admin No comments »

Well I guess this is the good luck week, knock on wood. Someone gave me an Acer Aspire 5050, which I promptly accepted, Since I don’t have a small Dev machine running on WinXp Sp-3. My Laptop is Vaio that runs Vista Ultimate + Visual Studio 2008 Team and a bunch of other 2007 based apps. Sot this small dual core machine is a blessing for me, since I can run Windows XP-SP3 and Visual Studio 2005 Pro with the older version of Office 2003 on this machine. A nice addition to my bag-o-tricks! LOL!

Bought an iPod Touch 2.0 – 32GB model

October 1st, 2008 by admin No comments »

Got an Apple iPod Touch 2.0 yesterday. Got 32GB version & it is nice! Not just an iPod-a net device! Sync nicely with my MobileME. Email and everything that you can think that you need on the net! The interface is well thought of – intuitive and fast! Apple’s Man-Machine-Interface always has been great and they have maintained that tradition in iPod Touch as well. Now it’s time to move some music in to this apparatus and find out how much better it is than my version 5.5 iPod 80GB. How do you like the audio quality of the new Version 2.0 as oppose to the previous one? Are they the same? Your comments, please.

Apple’s teflon Halo protects it for ANYTHING?

September 28th, 2008 by admin No comments »

Apple’s 10.5.5 is giving headaches to some. Adobe Printing – Elgato Video rendering, et-al. We hear nothin!! Must be the teflon halo! Nothing seems to stick to it, even when Apple is totally in the wrong. If Microsoft did this, we would all scream for the head of those responsible! Won’t we? I use Mac and PCs at work and at home. I develop for both platforms, so I am not biased! But we all treat Apple like it can’t do any wrong and Microsoft totally as opposite! What do you think? Do you do that too? Do you hate Microsoft windows Vista and you have never every see it or run it? Do ya? Don’t we all? Unfair? Yes – but reality of life.

NebuAd mess is really hitting the fan!

September 27th, 2008 by admin No comments »

Well NebuAd mess is really hitting the fan now. To the point that the ISPs are calling “opt-in” Targeting Ad! When will they learn? I am really – when will they learn that they cannot force consumers to watch ads and worse than that, if they are able to force us, who would really appreciate what they are trying to sell us – much less than buying it! Why are the marketing and advertising companies that work on the net so dumb! Most of us are sophisticated enough to know if we are being ad-fed (what NebuAd tried to do in UK) and if it is forced upon us, then it is guaranteed that we won’t buy, even tho the product might have been good! DuH! This the same stupid disease that the Spammer are suffering from! Change your ways guys – Forget about Ad-feeding us and definitely stop forcing the spam and ads on us! You might even be able to make money the right way! Do you feel the same way? Would you buy the product that <b><u>they forced its advertising</u></b> on you?

The new MSFT’s Ads: "I am a PC"

September 21st, 2008 by admin No comments »

I just saw the new ad campaign from MSFT and it looked good! at least much better than the Seinfeld, by far! Well it seems that MSFT is regaining back it’s spirit and wants to fight! Imagine if this monster with all it’s money wakes up! It will kick azz so so bad! I use Macs and PCs for my work as well as personal usage. SO I am not biased to wards or another one. But it’s time for Microsoft to come out swinging. What do you think? Do you like Microsoft to get a bit harder on it;s competitors? Like it used to be, or do you like the newer “gentler” Microsoft? Personally, I can’t stand the new gentler Microsoft! It is like the old USSR. MSFT is bid – rough and tumble, with a lot of money and large enough boot that can kick any competitor’s azz! But this is only my idea. What do you thing? Speak up!

Building a L.A.M.P. Server on OS X framework – PART 1

August 5th, 2008 by admin No comments »

light-bulb_~SS46007.jpg

For my L.A.M.P. project, running on an older machine and acting as a test server I was going to use an old Macintosh G4 (the Original Graphite), but decided against it. Why? Seems that a 512MB – G4 running at 400MHz machine might not be enough to do the job. So, I selected an iBook G4 (1GHz with 1.2GB of RAM), 14.1” screen. This also gives me the ability of taking my test server with me if I want to work on the road.

I will be downloading and installing the following software, which are freeware for the most part. There are many sites that actually have step-by-step instruction and how-tos that cover every aspect of the operation. L.A.M.P. stands for Linux – Apache – MySQL and PHP. This L.A.M.P. in reality will be an O.A.M.P., since I replaced the Linux with OS X. So here is a list of server software that is needed to setup a functioning L.A.M.P. Server:

1. Operating system: I chose Apple Mac Server Tiger (10.4.11) as the operating system of my new L.A.M.P. machine. I was going to use the Leopard server (10.5.4), but then I decided against it. The tiger version already is a strain on this hardware

2. MySQL: I downloaded the MySQL server from their site directly. I chose the version 4.1 that is used very widely because of its stability and bug fixes. As it is with the most UNIX and Linux program that you download, you have to recompile the whole thing locally and it is highly suggested that you compile the whole thing on the same machine that you want to run it on. I was thinking to compile the whole thing under my newer and faster Mac. But no cigar – must be compiled on target machine. This will be an overnight job. So tonight before I go to bed, I will setup the little iBook to compile the whole big-bad-wolf MySQL (poor iBook, talk about torture!).

3. Apache 2.2: This is an adventure by itself. Apple ships OS X server with the Apache 1.3. I am planning to use Apache 2.2+ in my L.A.M.P. But this is more complicated than it seems, since they suggest that you remove the older version first and then download and recompile the newer one. I am looking forward to this, since I have never removed Apache server in its entirety.

Here was what has been done up to now. In part two, I will go thru the details of installing and configuring the MySQL server.

How to save iPhone battery

August 4th, 2008 by admin No comments »

How to save iPhone battery and make iPhone less functional than a Razr:

2686247133_916d757707_o.jpg

1. Turn off Push Mail!

The most important selling pitch that Apple made to the IT community was the fact that the new iPhone 3G and the new version of iPhone Firmware will bring Push Mail to the table. Now they suggest switching it off to save battery? Makes no sense to me, since if you turn off that feature, then how would a Server push email to that device! Hmmm! Strike one…

2. Minimize the use of 3rd party Applications!

The second exciting feature in iPhone is the fact that Apple opened it up for the developers to build applications so we can easily download them via the AppStore, which in it’s own right is another exciting feature of the new iPhone 3G. Here they are now suggesting that we should not use this feature that we were so excited about was so exciting about. Hmmm! Strike two…

3. Turn Off 3G!

Another huge improvement over the original iPhone has been the addition of High-speed 3G systems. Faster Data – Video – and MMS (oops I forgot that iPhone has no video or MMS! LOL! Forgive me), suffice to say that 3G does all that much faster. Here they are now suggesting that the owners of the new iPhone 3G could turn this important function off to save battery? Hmmm! Strike three…

4. Minimize the use of Location services!

Yet another important functionality of iPhone is under attack for the sake of saving battery. GPS and Maps and location services are another important functionality that has been added to the new iPhone. To save battery we are suppose to turn this one off too? Hmmm! Strike four…

5. Turn off Bluetooth!

By Law, in most States and Provinces in North America, the use of hands free / Bluetooth is compulsory when driving! We know that this law has passed to minimize the loss attention from the actual driving that is brought about by a cell phone. Here we are again, being told not to use this Bluetooth, so we can save battery and quiet possibly cause accidents in our highways and byways! Hmmm! Strike five…

6. Turn off WiFi!

Another very useful feature of the iPhone is wireless 802.11G/N. This in it self is a very taxing feature on the battery. But if this service is available in the area, this could be the most useful feature of the phone. Since you have already turned off your Bluetooth, disabling this feature will totally deprive you of any type networking. Turning this feature of sometimes might be ok. But permanently – hmmmmm! Strike six…

7. Turn off that EQ!

This one truly takes the cake! EQ? How much battery could that use and how weak this batter is? I was under the impression that Nokia N95-8GB was bad with the battery. Seems it has direct and close competition, with one small difference; N95 has replaceable batteries!

When this phone was being designed and all these feature were included in to the design of this phone – wasn’t there even one hardware Eng. that could stand up to Mr. Jobs and state clearly that this battery won’t be able to handle all these features! Either provide a way to replacement batteries or come up with a more realistic design? And they say that software Engineers are kinda strange! One look at the hardware will tell you what we go thru to deal with it. I truly believe, if an iPhone owner follow all this advice – his/her iPhone will be functionally reduced to lower than a Motorola Razr.

iPhone is not the best phone in the world – how Apple Can improve it

July 20th, 2008 by admin No comments »

To begin with, I would like to clear this out of the way; that I am a Sr. Software Designer who works on both PC and Macintosh platforms. Further more I am a Macintosh user and developer and I have many products that carry ‘Apple branding’. So the following ‘rant’ is coming from a person who is an Apple enthusiast as well as a Mac user and developer. Having said that, here are my thoughts concerning the reasons that prove that iPhone, though nice and sexy, is far from being the best Smartphone out there:

2674306137_7054d39f8c_o.jpg

1.) The Missing Editing Features: Even though Apple Sells the iPhone as a Smartphone (PDA / Internet Device being part of it’s functionality), It still lacks the basic editing futures like “Copy – Cut and Paste, which in turn are very important when you have to do any text editing on a Smartphone! Why? Simple; who wants to keep using the small and awkward keyboard of any Smartphone? No one. This is where the Copy and paste comes very handy so you don’t have to retype text and possibly make other typos and spelling errors that will slow you down. So these functionalities, as rudimentary as they are in larger computers, become very important and useful on devices like a Smartphone.

2.) That Terrible Camera: When iPhone 1.0 hit the market my N95 provided a 5.5MP camera. The iPhone had a 2.0MP built in one. I said to myself, well it’s version 1.0 and it will change in the upgrade. Low and be hold, Apple turns around and includes the same camera (2.0MP) in the iPhone 2.0. Hard to digest and / or comprehend what Apple is doing here, but there you have it. The Camera should have been a 6.1MP. Apple didn’t even bother to include a small flash system to at least be used as a fill light and improve the quality of the pictures that is taken by the it’s ailing camera. I guess Apple decided “Who’s goanna take any pictures with that crappy camera”!

3.) Total Lack of Video: As it was the case with the version 1.0 of the iPhone – iPhone 2.0 has no ability to create or stream live videos! Is this a restriction imposed by Apple or AT&T? How does Apple want to compete against other Smartphone companies, when they have no video recording capability? Most new Smartphone can do HD recording, or at least soon that ability will be added to their flagship products.

4.) The Strange GPS: iPhone sports GPS can not provided turn by turn directions – but it can divulge your EXACT position to the world! Is that not a strange GPS? When it’s needed, it can’t help its rightful owner – but it can pinpoint your position for those that really want to trace you, legally or illegally! iPhone 1.0 also performs this task thru triangulation of the Cell towers that are activate, with an accuracy rate of one ± hundred feet (Your ISP will never admit to it).

5.) Unsatisfying Audio: Even though iPhone 3G has 2 small inbuilt speakers at the bottom of its frame phone, it still cannot play Music in Stereo! Nearly all the other Smartphone can perform this task with the higher models playing 3D Audio. May be Apple doesn’t want to give this functionality to it’s clients! In the name of Sam Hill: WHY NOT?

6.) The Missing MMS: It seems that apple has never heard of MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service). Apple, in its infinite wisdom, has decided that iPhone users do not need nor want to use MMS under any circumstances. So, MMS, is totally alien to iPhone and iPhone 3G. MMS is mostly software based that in turn depends on the communication-service that your ISP provides

7.) The Missing Secondary Camera: Nearly all, 99% of the G3 phones sold in Europe are 3G phones capable video calling. It is the norm for these Cell phones using their secondary camera as the Video out device for the phone. The secondary camera can be used in conjunction with the primary camera to mix video and send it to the person you call. This secondary is conveniently missing from iPhone and Apple keeps ignoring the fact and stays quiet about it!

8.) Locked Out Flash – Air & SilverLight: In a very surprising move, apple has locked out Adobe Flash – Air and Microsoft SilverLight from running on the iPhone 3G or the upgraded legacy iPhone. Reason give is that Apple does not condone one company ruling the iPod entertainment desktop! By the same token, Apple is really restricting the iPhone users from accessing all the material that are encoded in these standards and, severely handicaps iPhone competing against ANY Smartphone on the Market that support Flash – Air and SilverLight.

9.) Half-assed Exchange Support: Despite what Apple promotional material says, the Exchange support seem to be incomplete, at best. iPhone supports IMAP as it’s email protocol. That is not the Exchange default protocol. The Exchange managers can enable IMAP at their Exchange servers, so their iPhone users are able to pickup their emails. By doing that, the iPhone client looses the benefit of Exchange’s ‘PUSH Mail’ ability. iPhone at this time does not support Microsoft Exchange’s ActiveSync, consequently the iPhone client cannot remotely access the Calendar & Contact databases. This will be a deal breaker for the IT people for the following Reasons:

1. IMAP is not their primary Email protocol and if used they will loose the ability to push email to iPhone Clients.

2. iPhone doesn’t support ActiveSync, so IT loose the ability to sync ‘Calendar’ and ‘Contacts’ with the iPhone.

1. IRumors are that Apple has licensed ActiveSync and in the next versions of iPhone. Let’s hope that will be in the NEXT release of the iPhone software update and would be available to both version of iPhone.

10.) A User Friendly Battery: As it was the unfortunate case with the original iPhone, the iPhone 3G’s battery is not accessible by the user and can not be swapped with a full charged one, when the main battery has ran out. Apple reports improved Battery usage over the older version of iPhone., but I see this as a deal breaker for the iPhone being accepted by the IT Depts. as a viable alternative to Blackberry and or other Smartphone’s that provide interchangeable battery system.

If Apple fixes the shortcoming that I noted in this ‘rant’, iPhone 3G can very well be ‘ONE’ of the best phones out there.

Users reporting failed Windows and Office validations

July 20th, 2008 by admin No comments »

images-1.jpeg images.jpeg

Well, this was the header a few days ago on most RSS feeds that I picked up! Now Microsoft is saying that all the offline validation has been fixed and there are not problems any more. The question for the users are this: Why, after all this time after the release of these apps, we still have problems with their validation, be it onLine of off?

iPhone 1.0 and 2.0 have no ‘Cut & Paste’!

July 16th, 2008 by admin No comments »

images.jpegThis is beyond me – way beyond me. What is the harm of having ‘Cut & Paste’ on a phone that has editing capabilities for text – email and chat or any other App that might need it! How did, Apple in it’s infinite wisdom, came to this conclusion that iPhone needs no ‘Cute & Paste’? Sometimes Apple does things that makes no sense to anyone, except to itself. Do remember, at Apple, the ultimate decisions are made by Steve Jobs and his very small trusted inner circle. So here I am, trying to understand, what was the motive behind this decision. You see, if we can understand how these decision makings are done in Apple, may be we can understand Apple as a whole and happier with their products. Transparency and Informativeness are usually more powerful than decrees. Apple has always been more about the Steve Jobs Decrees than transparency and informativeness. May be, once Steve Jobs departs Apple (if he ever), then Apple will be more about being informative as suppose to be decretive. Amen!

Rogers the Robbers! When enough is REALLY enough!

July 15th, 2008 by admin No comments »

Well I guess this picture has no need to be captioned! This is how most of Canadian Customers think and feel about Rogers the Robbers, the one and only distributor of Apple iPhone in Canada! This is coming from as a direct side effect of Rogers-the-Robbers insatiable Greed of this company and it’s treatment of they clients! But some how – to this date they are still maintaining that with the 2GB data plan, they are offering a huge amount of data and that is exactly what bothers people the most! The assumption of the Canadian Customers are totally dumb. We we are not and we are much more savvy than Rogers-the-Robbers credit us with. We will not buy the iphone with this high rates and we will not accept the lack of UNLIMITED Data Plan. Rogers and companies like it, should learn that the consumer sets up the success abd promote it – No matter what they do!

Rogers has done it again! No UNLIMITED Data plan for iPhone

June 27th, 2008 by admin No comments »

Well Rogers has done it again, showing it’s yellow monopolistic teeth! 2GB of Data per month with the $115 Package? This is highway robbery! Are these corporate bloodsuckers for real?

All this is stemming from he fact that there are no competition for Rogers in Canada! No other GSM Service Provider! I was planning to at least buy 3 iPhone 3Gs, but I changed my mind! No iPhone till Rogers stops this draconian pricing for their data plan! What is hard to understand is this: Why Rogers has such a problem with DATA? Why? At least can they stop issuing decrees and actually explain to their clients why they are so stingy with their data bandwidth? May be also explain to us why the majority of Service Providers selling iPhone can sell their phones with an unlimited data plan?

Only 2GB a Month? This is a disgrace and it shows what Rogers really thinks about their Canadian Customers! They truly think that we are stupid & ignorant and that we neither know – nor are we capable of learning anything! Well I have news for you, Rogers: WE ARE NOT! I am canceling my plans for purchasing 3 iPhone 3G, until they offer UNLIMITED Data Plan! I am sure that most people, after finding out what Rogers is really doing, will cancel their plans as well. So I guess it was all for nothing to wait a full year for the arrival of iPhone to Canada! :(

Knowing about Rogers underhanded decision not to offer UNLIMITED data plan, Apple should have NEVER given iPhone sells rights to Rogers in the first place! Unlimited Data has been the cornerstone of Apple’s agreement for allowing a Service Provider to sell iPhone. Rogers held out for a full year, knowing that they have the monopoly on GSM market, and Apple gave up, which is very uncharacteristic of Apple. I guess Apple doesn’t care about their it’s Canadian Clients either!

OS X Snow Leopard and Windows 7 = Same Apporach!!

June 13th, 2008 by admin No comments »

Well I seem to have been right, again (if I may say so). As I said, in my short blog, the next version of OS X will be the same Leopard – just it will be really massaged – debugged and optimized and turbo charged! Do you draw a similarity with the Microsoft approach here? Windows 7 will be Vista – just it will be really massaged – debugged – optimized and turbo charged! Sacrilege! Apple following Microsoft in to the den of lions, no way! Well yes way!I guess this step on behalf of both companies is the nest logical step. They both have a great OS, and now after all this time, they will step back and improve their respective Operating Systems. Microsoft can go far in fixing the grievances that exist against Vista and make it what PC Users are looking for. They have a great and brand new Code Base that they can modify – fix and optimize to hell, especially in the area of Multi tasking – SMP – Threading and Thread Management. They can also improve the Thread_to_Core development tools in Visual studio 2009 or as a service pack to VS2008. This will also help other Software Engineers to develop that type application, that will certainly makes a better User experience. Apple on the other hand can improve on 64 bit version and in fact make it the de facto of OS X, that can run 32 Apps as well. In time all the Developers will recompile their applications in 64 bit format. Apple has a lot of work to be done on the improvement of her the XCode. In comparison to Visual Studio, XCode is very basic and primitive. So this will be time well spend to set Visual studio as a starting point and then deliver Visual Studio as a minimal delivery cornerstone and surpass it by a long way. Mind you this will prove to be very hard task to achieve, since Visual Studio 2008 is totally amazing. But is great in under promising and over delivering. May be both companies can admit that they have great Operating Systems that is in dyer need of optimization and improvements. Yes Stranger things has happened, but would this also happen? Hard to believe!

Router crashes blamed on Windows XP SP3?

June 7th, 2008 by admin No comments »

Been having problems with your broadband router rebooting unexpectedly? Windows XP SP3 has been named as the culprit?

Broadband modem/router maker Billion says XP SP3 has been causing its BiPAC 5200-series routers to go into a constant crash and reboot cycle.

The company has produced firmware upgrades that solve the problem. Although Windows XP SP3 has been available for manual download from Microsoft since May 6, it has just hit Windows Update as an automatic upgrade, which will cause unexpected problems for owners of “unpatched” Billion BiPAC 5200 routers, and possibly other brands or models of router. No this is a load of crap if I have ever heard one! How the hell SP3 of the XP causes the crash of a Router! This is the best example of: “BLAME IT ON MICROSOFT! This is really going overboard! Billion clean up your act and stop blaming your tech problems! the best part is: Billion doesn’t even bother to explain how they have come to this conclusion as to why SP-3 has caused the problem or show any proof! Not bad, just point Microsoft and scream!

New D-Link coax cable home networking tech to hit 175Mbps

May 29th, 2008 by admin No comments »

d-link.png

The D-Link Coax Ethernet Adapter Kit (DXN-221) is targeted at the home network. This isn’t a router though, and it’s not meant for everyone. D-Link is targeting home users that already have coaxial wiring in their home, promising to put it to good use in their existing network. In a way, the move makes perfect business sense for D-Link since most new homes and apartments come wired with coaxial. Homeowners want their satellite and cable signals everywhere throughout the domicile, and the same goes for their home network and Internet connection.

MY QUESTION IS THIS: At this time that Cable & DSL companies and trying to ‘cap’ the amount of bandwidth that consumers can use per month (First and worse Videotron Cable company), is this not a true contradiction in term? We give you a modem that can run at 175Mb/s and at the same time we will cap your usage to a minimum. So bad, that at that high speed, you can burn thru your Monthly quota in matter of few days. So this shows that ISPs want to kill Net Neutrality one – and two start metering and over charging the North American consumers. The business model that the European ISPs were using for nearly 10 years and now they have given it all up and took metering out of the big pictures, since the European Government forced them to do so.

Some pity for the North American Consumer, since we do not have governments that would get involved on the side of the Consumer battling the evil intentions of large and monopolizing corporations. In Canada our last hope hangs with CRTC. May be they would challenge the ISPs on the mater of Net Neutrality and Metering and over charging Data Related Services.

Is iPone 2.0 really coming in June 9th WWDC08?

May 21st, 2008 by admin No comments »

iPhone.png I never bought the iPhone last year when it was released! Wy you say, because Apple and AT&T had it wrapped so hard that nothing was open or modifiable by the owner that I decided to go with N95-8G which has been working great for me for the past several months. Now there is talk of the new iPhone, possibly version 2.0. I am not convinced that the next release is truly version 2.0. If I deem it to be version 2.0, then I will place my order right there and then. But until then, I reserve judgement. Tho, I am excited…

New iPhone Software Update at a glance

March 6th, 2008 by admin No comments »

Well here we go: Apple has released the latest software release for iPhone and that truly has pushed it on the top and we are THIS close to iPhone Version 2.0 (and that is the time that I will buy mine and not sooner. Here is the outline of the additional functionality with the application of this update from Apple:

1.) Exchange Server ActiveSync
2.) Push Email direct from Exchange server
3.) Push Contacts direct from the Exchange server
4.) Access to Global Address list
5.) Support for Certificates and Identities (great for Corporate based systems)
6.) Wireless 802.1x and support of WPA2 (great security)
7.) Enforcing Server based Security Group Policies
8.) Remote setup and configuration Tools
9.) Remote Wipe ( this is great incase someone looses the phone
This is in addition to all the functionality that is already built in to the device. Wake makes it so much nicer is the fact that all these new additions are built in to the existing application and there are not steep learning curves. A Well thought of step on Apple’s side.
We have to also acknowledge that Apple has had the full cooperation of Microsoft in all this and they have helped a great deal to facilitate these new developments.

Apple doubles capacity of iPhone and iPod Touch

February 5th, 2008 by admin No comments »

The next step towards iPhone 2.0 and a new iPOd. A 32GB iPod and a 16GB iPhone. The new iPhone will have more memory than my 10GB Nokia N95-8G. This also can be the next step to the resurrection of a new version of Newton. Could it be? Hard to believe Jobs will change his mind about Newton. After all it was Steve Jobs that killed Newton. But even in his case, Hell Froze over and he used INTEL chips in his beloved Macs. Can this hell Also freeze over? Anything is possible…

Industry legend states that Coleco named its first (and last) foray into the home computer market “Adam” because the system would take a bite out of Apple Computers. This of course wasn’t the case. But the name did prove Biblically accurate in that both Adams were massive disappointments to their creators.  But you have to remember the Printer that came with the system.  It was a Typewriter quality and it was totally amazing at the time that Dot Matrix Printers ruled.  The printer was text only though and you could only do ASCII graphics with it – No Dot Addressable facility.  A time Gone by – A time of adventure – A time of wonder – long gone.

Microsoft Acquiring Yahoo – Sanity check!

February 1st, 2008 by admin No comments »

Microsoft Friday unveiled a bid of 44.6 billion dollars for Yahoo in an effort to merge the world’s biggest software company with a major Internet player to take on the Google juggernaut. Yahoo said it was examining the “unsolicited proposal” and added that its board “will evaluate this proposal carefully and promptly in the context of Yahoo’s strategic plans and pursue the best course of action to maximize long-term value for shareholders.”
The move comes as Yahoo is losing ground rapidly in the Internet space to Google, the search leader which has been able to cash in on the growing market for online advertising.
Google is truly taking over the internet market and Microsoft feels the threat and wants to encounter it with any desprate move. Yahoo is in rapid spiral decline against Good and MSN, and we all know that it will be nothing but trouble for Microsoft.  On the other hand Google is becoming an irresistible force that no one can encounter or even imagine to take on.  Sacrilege!  Of course MS will take over all those heads that are using yahoo at this time – but this will be a simulated addition and not a true one.  I also predict that if Microsoft buys Yahoo, the Yahoo decline will speed up and the migration to alternate system will intensify.  I guess we have to wait and see. In my opinion, MS might benefit from this merge in the short run – but shall register a huge loss in the long run.  Another point to consider will be this: Is yahoo worth $45B?  Hard to say, but I feel it is not – at least not in the long run.

Microsoft confirms Office for Mac 2008 security risk

January 27th, 2008 by admin No comments »

Office for Mac 2008 offers a security headache for many users, Microsoft has confirmed.

Office for Mac 2008 incorrectly assigns ownership of some files, Microsoft has confirmed, creating a potential security problem for businesses installing the new application suite.
[Microsoft] moved to Apple’s Package Maker (.pkg) installer files, good news for the enterprise, [but] unfortunately they’ve created all the packages to install nearly all the files with the owner set to 502.” Office 2008’s ownership assignment means that a user who wasn’t supposed to have complete control over those files actually does. In other words, whoever is assigned user ID 502 has full read/write access to Office’s files.

Well this is an installation problem and your ID 502 will not kill the system just because it is has access to some files! LOL! Not to worry to much!

Preliminary MacBook Air Tests By MacWorld

January 25th, 2008 by admin No comments »

Well some of the Early results are in and it seems that you the Slow 1.6GHz Processor of the MacBook Air and the 4200rpm drive makes this machine THE slowest MacBook Out there. The Standard MacBook seem to be at least 20% faster than the Air and MacBook Pro proves to be closer to 30%-40% faster. So it seems that this is a thinest Mac ever – granted – but no match for it’s siblings. As I said in my last post – this is a machine for executives – students and some Mac heads that buy an Apple product that comes to the market, no matter what it is. But damn it! Is it ever sexy. Now that is a laptop that gets you laid. In other words; if Air can’t get you laid – you are hopeless! J/K

Apple’s Macworld Conference & Expo 2008

January 24th, 2008 by admin No comments »

Macworld
Conference & Expo

After 3 years absence from the Apple’s Macworld & Expo, this year I had the opportunity to be there and see the whole thing first hand for myself. It was a huge gathering much larger than the years past and it was extremely vibrant! You could feel the electricity in the ‘Air’. Expectations were high and every one was looking forward to the fact that their prediction and or wishes might come true.
At the end of the Keynote event, I must admit that not everyone was satisfied, which is the normal thing. Seems that people expect a Product of the caliber of iPod – iPhone or migration to INTEL, every time that Steve jobs takes the podium! Well no one can do that – not even Steve “the magician” Jobs! So it’s time for a reality check. Products like iPod and iPhone comes once in a career and Steve jobs has had many of them – but we can not expect a new and better one every time that he takes the podium!

Having said that, here is my assessment of the Apple’s Macworld Expo:

Here is a list of new stuff that was announced at the Expo:

• iPhone / iPod touch Software
• Microsoft Office 2008 Universal
• Time Capsule / Airport Extreme 802.1N
• iTunes Movie Rentals
• MacBook Air

1. iPhone / Pod software upgrades:
• iPhone is one step close to the version 2.0. when it will truly ready for “human consumption”. Home screen now can be customized and show what you really use every day and not what Apple thinks that you will be using. Come to think of it, we had this option released with Motorola’s revolutionary T720 nearly 6 years ago which you could customize the menus and screens and from there on, you could find this functionality on just about every phone. Other improvement and bug fixes were also made to the iPhone software. Steve Jobs did mention that the SDK for iPhone will be released very soon – so we can all rest that Jobs Demons are not at work anymore – if they were we would never get an SDK to develop any type of applications for iPhone.
• iPod Touch software upgrade was every more significant, adding 4 new Apps to it’s general functionality. Mail.app was a great new addition to the iPod Touch, especially for those that use WiFi function of the iPod. I feel that is a better idea than owing an iPhone and use it as PDA / iPod and endanger loss of communication due to lack of power, since we know that we can not change the battery. So it would be great if you have your phone and an iPod Touch 16GB. A good enough PDA – a great iPod and in worse case scenario if it runs out of your battery, your phone is there safe and functioning. I am using a Nokia N95-8G and I am planning to add an iPod-Touch to my arsenal. Like this; I have a PDA – iPod and my Smartphone. A thought that might benefit many of you out there.
• The new software for both iPhone and iPod-Touch will be released with every new iPhone and iPod that is sold from today. The fortunate thing is this the update for the existing iPhones are available free of charge. The owners of the iPod-Touch can download all the updates and the new Apps from Apple for $20.
• Recommended (especially for the iPod-Touch, since the iPhone update will be Automatic)

2. Microsoft Office 2008:
• Microsoft Released Office 2008 with no fanfare and that we very surprising for me. I was really looking forward from some remarks from Mac-BU of MS. Bit no one was there. I have ordered a copy of the Office at the show and I received it this morning and I just installed and it looks good. Same components of the 2004 (I think Microsoft will never port the Access Database to OS-x), but the most important thing is the fact that the entire office now runs in Universal mode and no more Rosetta emulation to run on my MacBook Pro! I am planning to install it on an old PowerBook Titanium and see how it works there. One thing is for sure: It runs much faster now that is running x86 native code on my machine. I think the Standard Edition will be enough for most of us and the Students / Teachers have the opportunity to enjoy their traditional discount. The top package is about $100 more expensive and facilitates Media environments. The update is $299.
• It still remain a mystery as to why Microsoft Mac-BU VP was not present at the MacWorld Expo for the kick off of such an important product.
• Recommended (if you have to use it because of your work, it is a worth update)

3. Time Capsule / Airport Extreme 802.1N:
• Time capsule is basically an update to the software only TimeMachine that was introduced with the release of Leopard (OS X 10.5). Time Capsule makes sense because of a few reasons:
o Set it and forget it back up
o Wireless and now computer necessary to handle the backups
o An upgrade to your existing 802.1 B-A-G.
o Large hard drive backing up DATA only from all your systems
• I certainly am considering one for my home system, as soon as it will be clear if it can back up PCs as well as Macs, since I am using both and a backup solution must cover both.
• Recommended

4. iTune Movie Rentals:
• Well this has been in the pipes for a long time now and Apple tried to get all the partners on-board, before announcing it. Well it seems they have been successful and it is a great idea on the part of Apple. Now if Apple could do what they did with music with movies then they stand to make a lot of money.
• But there is pricing problem. Apple announced the following prices:
o $2.99 for Library titles
o $3.99 for New Titles
o $4.99 for HD
• I’d say this steep and Apple might not sell as much as they think. I suggest that prices should have been:
o $1.99 for Library titles
o $2.99 for New Titles
o $3.99 for HD
• There is also a timeline problem. You have 30 days to start watching the movie that you downloaded – which is great. But when you start watching the movie, you have 24 hours to finish it and after that, just like Mission Impossible, the movie will self destruct. Of course this is the same as Dish Network and Bell Express view as well as old DVD / VHS rentals. But if Apple would have priced it lower and instead of 1 day they would have giver their clients a maximum of 3 days, they it would have brought them much more business than the present setup. I know that most of this has been dictated to Apple by the RIAA and Movie companies. But still…

MacBook Air:
• Well it is “impossibly thin and light”, yet it has a full size screen and Keyboard! It is a huge achievement on part of Apple Computer Inc. No other company have achieved this – at least up to now. Amazing screen – Good speed. But IT IS NOT FOR EVERYONE! The biggest problems that I see with it are as follows:
o No Ethernet connection. So if you are stuck in an environment that has not Wireless connection, then you have no connection. Of course, Apple will sell you a $30 Dongle thaqt gives you Ethernet capabilities via USB. But as we know, USB take 5%-15% of the CPU time and that in a small Laptop like is indeed a lot. But at least it can prove to be a life saver.
o No Replaceable Batteries. So if you use your laptop a lot, and on the battery, then this is not the laptop for you. The battery is internal and can not be swapped. It reminds you of iPhone / iPod. Foot prints of Mr. Jobs of closed is better mentality all over this machine.
o No Internal Optical Drive. So if you are not close to home base, so you can share their optical drive to Wirelessly installing software from it, then you are up a creek-without-a-paddle! So install ‘everything-that-you-ever-need’ on this machine before leaving your home base. But you have the option to buy an external Optical drive for it (I am not sure if it actually burns CD/DVD) but certainly reads both formats and it’s a USB Device that you can use on a one and only USB port that this machine comes with! Not that great. If you plan to use an external Mouse and Keyboard, make sure that you get them with Bluetooth option, so you can leave this single USB port alone. If not, then think of investing in a Powered USB Hub (4-Port, at least).
• Having said all that – I can also add that the machine is amazingly sexy and unique. Of course, on the first glance, it reminds you of executive machines. But consider this idea: if you are a college student that you run around your campus and need to have a small machine to carry around for your notes and references and class materials, then the small size of this laptop will be a blessing to you. Also Perfect for executives and people that do a lot of presentations.
• All in All a very impressive package that you need to improve with a few essential / optional additions:
o Get a small, but powered USB Dongle (essential)
o Get an USB -> Ethernet dongle (essential)
o Get an Apple USB Modem for Dialup internet and FAX (Optional)
o Get the Apple External SuperDrive that for $99 is a great bargain. Cheapest External DVD burner could be as much as $149. (Essential)
o More to say about the performance of the Air, as soon as we get one in the office. I am sure it will be soon. People want to test the software that we produced on such system too.  Wink wink!

I am looking forward to this years WWDC08.  I am hoping that I am the one that will be going to that conference.  See you there…

I am also working on a Long and detailed report of the Apple’s Macworld and Expo which I will shortly post here. Be back soon.

Can Microsoft Really Save the Zune?

January 11th, 2008 by admin No comments »

In late 2006, Microsoft released its first generation Zune, a digital media platform comprised of a portable digital media player, Windows-based software, and an online service. But at least the company had a reason for this inactivity: It was prepping a revolutionary Zune 2.0 release comprised of new players, new software, new online services, and new capabilities all around.

I see it this way: No matter what MS might or might not do about Zune, until this Social thing is there Zune is a dead product! Get rid of the stupid “Social” (as Microsoft should get rid of WOW in Vista) and then allow people to put anything in their Zune – MP3 – AAC, etc. and then may be something would come off of this prodcut! Until then NADA!

‘First’ iPhone Trojan rolls into town

January 7th, 2008 by admin No comments »

Hackers have created Trojan horse malware targeted at Apple’s much-hyped iPhone device.
The package – more of a prank than a threat – poses as an “important system” upgrade supposedly needed prior to upgrading to version 1.1.3 of Apple’s firmware. The “iPhone firmware 1.1.3 prep” seems to lack malicious purpose. Problems kick in when users try to uninstall the package.
Well we were waiting for it and now it is here! Is is a right thing to provide a device like a phone or PDA with a complete and powerful OS like OS X or Windows Mobile? Can you imagine what damage that can be brought about to corporate and governmental Information Systems by a compromised Smartphones and/or PDAs? Is it time to think about Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware on Smartphones – PDAs and Tablets? I can hear more ‘cha-chink’ in Norton pockets!

Samsung intros Spinpoint M6 500GB standard height laptop drive, Hitachi be damned

January 6th, 2008 by admin No comments »

Hitachi had to hack it to produce a 500GB 2.5-inch laptop drive, adding another platter (and a few millimeters thickness) that make their new 5K500 impossible to install in most standard laptops and enclosures — but not Samsung. The Spinpoint M6 500GB drive brings a half terabyte at the standard 9.5mm height, and should land some time in March, meaning your current laptop — and not just those new Asus machines — should be able to accommodate one or two of these massive mothers.
This is amazing! 500GB in a 2.5″ laptop drive! Are these new advancement in memory and hard drive leaving the desktop in the dust? Is it time to buy Laptops only? The jury is still out on that one. But you can use another 500GB external drive with your laptop and have a cool Tera Byte carrying it in your laptop case. Is anyone thinking about how these huge storage devices has to be backed up? If I owned a hard drive company, I would assign 30% of my workforce to work on the backup devices. Like this, the hard drives are sold and everyone would also buy my backup devices. Does not make sense? If it does – why we don’t hear of such devices being developed in conjunction with large hard drives.

D-Link MediaLounge PC-on-TV DPG-1200 ready to send web content to your TV

January 5th, 2008 by admin No comments »

Just because media shifting is totally last year doesn’t mean D-Link’s MediaLounge PC-on-TV DPG-1200 isn’t welcome, even if that model number is a bit of a mouthful. The product can ship YouTube, Google Video, Veoh content and plenty more that the internet has to offer over a wired or wireless connection to your regular ol’ TV. There’s no special player involved, the product just mirrors your PC display, so virtually anything you can see on you PC you can see on your TV, including all sorts of media and even DVDs. The remote includes a trackball for controlling your PC remotely, and the 1280 x 720 resolution and 30 frames per second should offer enough fidelity to keep up with the action. No word on price or availability yet, but we should be finding out more next week when PC-on-TV hits CES.
This is a long time coming! Will they be able to pull it off this time? No one knows! For some reason people do nto accept the intrusion of Web – or internet for that matter – into their TV. If DLink pull this off it will be a miracle!

Microsoft readies Hal 9000

January 4th, 2008 by admin No comments »

The corporate lie detector!!!!
Judging from a recent patent application, Microsoft hopes to build some sort of “activity monitoring system” that keeps an eye on worker productivity using various “physiological or environmental sensors.” These sensors would track everything from heart rate, respiration rate, body temperature, facial expressions, and blood pressure to brain signals and galvanic skin response.Redmond sees this system as a way for companies and, um, governments to monitor “group activities.” “In particular, the system can monitor user activity, detect when users need assistance with their specific activities, and identify at least one other user that can assist them,” the patent application reads, in classic patent speak. “Assistance can be in the form of answering questions, providing guidance to the user as the user completes the activity, or completing the activity such as in the case of taking on an assigned activity.”

Microsoft – all the Billions that you make, is not enough and now you have to get on screwing the masses? Stop already! This is another tool that you are providing the Corps to get enough excuses and outsource more and more of their work with the pretense of low productivity and high salaries! NOW YOU REALLY are showing your colors! You are already the most hated Corp out there an now you are getting in worse situation with the Hal-9000?

Apple Creating iMac-like Docking Station

January 3rd, 2008 by admin No comments »

Rumor has it that Apple is working on a iMac Shell that works as a docking station for a Pen based Mac that transforms to a Desktop! Now could this be the hand held device that we were all waiting for? Is this the Son of Newton?what do you think about the concept. You can carry it around, and when you get back to your Home?office you just shove it in a dock station that closely resembles the iMac with a larger HD as well as faster 1Gb networking and also ability to connect external devices (i.e. External Drives – Printers, et al. the Optical drive also is stationed in the Doc. But here is the twist: what if this was a intelligent Dock and the portable unit could be in touch with it’s docking stating (hence all devices that are connected to the Doc). WOW! I am just speculating – but would you not love an Mac like that? For that matter – ‘A’ computer like that?

Snorting a Brain Chemical Could Replace Sleep

December 29th, 2007 by admin No comments »

In what sounds like a dream for millions of tired coffee drinkers, Darpa-funded scientists might have found a drug that will eliminate sleepiness.
A nasal spray containing a naturally occurring brain hormone called orexin A reversed the effects of sleep deprivation in monkeys, allowing them to perform like well-rested monkeys on cognitive tests. The discovery’s first application will probably be in treatment of the severe sleep disorder narcolepsy.
The treatment is “a totally new route for increasing arousal, and the new study shows it to be relatively benign,” said Jerome Siegel, a professor of psychiatry at UCLA and a co-author of the paper. “It reduces sleepiness without causing edginess.”
Orexin A is a promising candidate to become a “sleep replacement” drug. For decades, stimulants have been used to combat sleepiness, but they can be addictive and often have side effects, including raising blood pressure or causing mood swings. The military, for example, administers amphetamines to pilots flying long distances, and has funded research into new drugs like the stimulant modafinil (.pdf) and orexin A in an effort to help troops stay awake with the fewest side effects.

AOL kills Netscape

December 28th, 2007 by admin No comments »

AOL LLC today pulled the plug on Netscape Navigator, the Web browser that once owned the lion’s share of the market and that was the focus of a landmark federal antitrust case against Microsoft Corp. In an announcement posted to AOL’s blog for the browser, Tom Drapeau, the director of the company’s Netscape brand, said the team is ending development and would cease issuing security updates as of Feb. 1, 2008. “Given AOL’s current business focus and the success the Mozilla Foundation has had in developing critically-acclaimed products, we feel it’s the right time to end development of Netscape-branded browsers, hand the reigns [sic] fully to Mozilla and encourage Netscape users to adopt Firefox,” Drapeau said. I guess beating of a dead horse is finished -At last! A moment of silence please!

SCO bumped off Nasdaq

December 28th, 2007 by admin No comments »

logo-bgblue.gif
The SCO Group has been removed from the Nasdaq Stock Market because the company declared bankruptcy in September. The stock market delisted SCO and suspended trading of its shares (SCOX) at the beginning of trading on Thursday, SCO said in a filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Nasdaq had told the company in September that it would be delisted, and SCO’s subsequent appeal of that determination was turned down.
WOW! The have been out since Sept 2007 and it took the Commission nearly 4 month to bump the off of the stock market? Talk about red tape! They should have thrown this evil company with all these wrong doing a long time ago! SCO is a complete ‘fail’ and not it is dead! Whoohooo!

Serious Flash vulns menace at least 10,000 websites

December 23rd, 2007 by admin No comments »

adobe.gif
Researchers from Google and a well-known security firm have documented serious vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash content which leave tens of thousands of websites susceptible to attacks that steal the personal details of visitors.
The security bugs reside in Flash applets, the ubiquitous building blocks for movies and graphics that animate sites across the web. Also known as SWF files, they are vulnerable to attacks in which malicious strings are injected into the legitimate code through a technique known as cross-site scripting, or XSS. Currently there are no patches for the vulnerabilities, which are found in sites operated by financial institutions, government agencies and other organizations.

Its amazing that with all this vulnerabilities, how does insecure sites like USTREAM.TV and STCKAM.TV actually still functioning? If so are they infected too? If they are, then how many clients machines have they infected? It is getting scary out there, even for protected systems. in fact, the question is: Who is ‘really’ protected? No one?

Use Case Driven Object Modeling with UML

December 23rd, 2007 by admin No comments »
iconix_process_chapter_opener.jpg

If you figure that preliminary design is all about object discovery, then detailed design is, by contrast, about behavior allocation – that is, allocating the software functions you’ve identified into the set of classes you discovered during preliminary design.
When you draw sequence diagrams, you’re taking another sweep through the preliminary design, adding in detail. You use sequence diagrams to drive the detailed design. We advocate drawing your sequence diagrams in a minimal style.

Case Driven Object Modeling – This is what I have beens saying for the past 5 years to my Colleagues and co-working Engineers: ‘Visually define Behavior and Allocation of your Objects and Classes so the next person who looks at your Design / Procedures and Code can easily and quickly understand what you are trying to do and what were “your” state of mind when you designed what you did.’ But I guess, at least most of us, are either too lazy to add this one extra step to our software cycle or we are looking for job security. The harder the code is to understand the more job security we have with the company that we work for.

Malware Bumps Google Ads From Web Pages

December 22nd, 2007 by admin No comments »

googlelogo.jpg
A security company has identified a Trojan horse program that replaces Google text advertisements on Web pages with ads from another source, depriving Google of revenue and potentially causing problems for end users.

Is this a orchestrated effort on part of other advertising companies to take Google out of the dominant position? Yes yes yes! I know…This is a conspiracy theory – but what if someone – somewhere in the world that had enough money and power and decided to knock off Google off it’s dominant throne of online advertising! It is possible…. nahhhh! Google is too big for anyone to fool around with, or is it?

IBM rolls out new search tool for e-mail: ComputerWorld Says!

December 20th, 2007 by admin No comments »

December 20, 2007 (Computerworld) — IBM rolled out new search software from its research labs today that’s aimed at allowing users to find information that may be buried in the vast amount of e-mail many people now store on the desktop.
The new IBM OmniFind Personal Email Search (IOPES), which can be downloaded for free, is a semantic search tool aimed at bringing the search mechanisms made famous on the Web by Google Inc. to the desktop, said Douglass Wilson, distinguished engineer and chief technology officer of IBM’s Lotus Development Corp. unit.

Call me old fashioned, but I still think that IBM, quietly, is the king of the computer world! Is there an aspect of computers that I BM is not involved in? FYI, IBM is the largest Software Vendor! I bet you thought that title belong to Microsoft, right? Seriously…Am I right?

Vista sets 2007 land-speed record for copying and deleting: Says The Register!

December 20th, 2007 by admin No comments »

long-goodbye.jpg
48167 Days and 23 hours to create CD!!
t’s been almost nine months since we first reported on Windows Vista’s inability to copy, delete and move files without stalling indefinitely, and yet the problem continues.

What caught my eye in this story and when you read it, I am sure it will get your attention that MS has had nearly a year to fix such a basic problem as Copy & Move and they still refuse to fix it. Since if they fixed it, they have to admit to fact that developed such a dead duck that can’t perform even the basic OS operations like ‘copy’ and ‘move’! Unbelievable! Can someone measure the size of these Mircrosofties egos! Is it Ego, or is it marketing and damage control? Does Microsoft really think by ignoring these problems, they would really go away or the Users magically are hit by total and instantaneous dementia? How advises these people and why are they listening to their advise? Come on Microsoft! Grow up and take responsibility for your actions! Please copy the core code from XP and review it against vista! You will find many of your questions will be answered! But the dumb thing is the fact that you refuse to acknowledge the existence of these basic problems! Do we really have to wait for Service Pack 3 to to get a working Copy and Move functions? Seems so! But can you imagine if Microsoft decides not to acknowledge the existence of these problems and would refuse to fix them? Then we will all be sure that Vista is a DEAD Horse. As it is, Most people think that way and the best proof of it is the fact that people are staying with their existing Windows XP systems (hence not upgrading to newer hardware) – They down grade from Vista to Windows XP or they down right ask for a brand new machine to come with Windows XP on it (Dell decided to offer their systems with XP)!
Well there you have it, in a nut shell – Microsoft is too big to even care about such basic problems in their OS. Here we are expecting that complex matters like security and scalability be improved? Maybe we, as buyers of Microsoft’s products, should demand for basics, first…

Facebook settles text-messaging suit! Yahoo_Tech says…

December 18th, 2007 by admin No comments »

FaceBookgif.gif
SAN JOSE, Calif. – Pressured by a lawsuit, Internet social network Facebook Inc. will adopt new measures to prevent its 58 million members from sending text messages to recycled cell phone numbers. The settlement was announced Tuesday by attorneys for an Indiana woman who claimed Palo Alto-based Facebook had been profiting from text messages sent by its members after the intended recipients had given up the phone numbers. The lawsuit filed by Lindsey Abrams of Patriot, Ind., said she received text messages with explicit comments and other upsetting content — and had to pay 10 cents each time. Facebook received a share of the fee, according to the complaint.

Well that was quick – too quick for comfort, if you’d ask me! Does this mean that Facebook was profiting from this scheme somehow – hence the quick turn around? Nothing is proven of course, but isn’t this a very quick about face for FaceBook (no pun intended)?

Adobe! Optimize Flash (Server and Client)… Pretty Please!

Adobe Flash client / Shockwave server, both have made wonders for Internet and Internet content as we know it. But they are resource Hogs! CPU – Memory and Bandwidth! Does Adobe think that we all have unlimited resources and CPU powers and huge internet bandwidth at our finger tips? The answer is no and they know it! So how about some Optimization Adobe? Will help a lot. Who? Users of such contents (nearly all of us) – Producers of such content (all of them). makes a lot of sense to me. What would you say to Adobe if they had all your attention?

Google Wants To Index Your Videos! TechCrunchs says!

December 18th, 2007 by admin No comments »

googlelogo.jpg
Google has launched Sitemaps for Video, an extension of their webmaster sitemaps program that will assist webmasters in having their videos indexed by Google.
To be indexed, webmasters must create a sitemap page that provides a list of videos on each site that is compliant with Googles sitemaps protocol, which since November 2006 is standardized with Yahoo and Microsoft as well. Webmasters then simply submit the URL of their video sitemap to Google for indexing.

“Do no Evil”! hmmmm! Is this not the motto of Google? But it seems that google has it’s hands in everything that we are doing. Google is now in the Alternative Fuel – and now they want to get their little grubby hands on the videos that you have ‘IN YOUR COMPUTER’! Question is: Why? Why does that interest Google and what is the long term profit that Google sees in it? Google is turning to a multi-tentecles monster, connected to more and more aspect of our lives! Is this not Evil in itself? I guess we have no choice, expect to wait and see! One thing is for sure: “Absolute Power Corrupts Absolytely!”

UStream.TV Gets Some Cash And General Wesley Clark Says TechCrunch!

December 18th, 2007 by admin No comments »

ustream-logo.pngWhat does General Wesley Clark know about live Web video? Apparently enough to land him a seat on Ustream.TV’s board of advisors. Or maybe they just liked his shiny medals. The company also announced a funding round today from Band of Angels and Western Technology Investors, which specializes in debt financing for startups. The amount was not disclosed. Are these the same people that bellyache that they can’t hire a janitor to clean their offices but they get a 4 star retired general on the board of advisors? WOW! Who they kidding? They are ‘phishing’ for some credibility and they are willing to pay for it! What also is interesting that we found out they don’t have a “hiring Freeze” as they say they do. Ustream you getting so obvious. A bit of tact goes a long way!

Apple keeps critical security fixes to itself???

December 15th, 2007 by admin No comments »

Apple has released updates for two widely distributed products that harbored a raft of security vulnerabilities, some of which were actively being exploited by miscreants. Unbelievably, the company isn’t presenting either as a security fix to mainstream users despite the risk the bugs pose for its millions of users.

That statement in it self was hard to digest! Apple had the fixes for the holes that were being actively exploited, but did not distribute them? Is that what they are saying? i have a hard time believing this! Why would Apple – and for that matter – any company do that? Let’s make some sense!
